So let’s all bid a not-so-fond farewell to old man winter (finally) and catch that breath of fresh, spring air coming our way as we heat up those Apple TV’s and bask in the reassuring glow of our cinematic security blankets this lovely, lovely weekend. And when it’s time to kick back on the couch after all your vigorous outdoor activities we do hope this week’s Pix Picks are equally refreshing for your weekend soul.

NETFLIX:

  • Adult TV Pick of the Week– If you’re in need of a riotously rude, lewd laughing fit then get ready to blow your beer through your nose with the all new addition of Season 4 (that’s thirteen- 21 minute episodes to you) of the obnoxiously hilarious, Archer”, from Creator Adam Reed. Yes, everyone’s favorite Superspy/Mama’s Boy/Burt Reynolds’s fan is back with his equally dysfunctional crew of I.S.I.S. co-workers as they try their best to keep their jobs and fight…well…mostly each other. If you’re a fan, you’re in for a great weekend of wicked putdowns you’re going to save for later use and if you’re an “Archer” novice get ready for a marathon viewing session of TV’s most politically incorrect and socially inappropriate Spy. And Aisha TylerWE LOVE YOU! Serious WARNING: This animated series is for ADULTS ONLY and while your children will undoubtedly enjoy some of the humor, you’re going to have a lot of explaining to do if you let them watch it all.

  • If you’re in the mood for a quiet character study about three good-hearted fringe dwellers carefully treading water as they gently go their own way then take a look at 2003’s excellent indie, The Station Agent”, from Writer/Director Thomas McCarthy. The passionate cast include a pre-GoT Peter Dinklage as Finbar, a dwarf-sized man studiously attempting to mold his world to fit his need for solitude and Bobby Cannavale as a gregarious, good natured entrepreneur who meets him along the way then actively seeks his friendship. The casually sultry Patricia Clarkson rounds out the socially reclusive trio as a recently divorced woman suffering from a terrible loss and the story unfolds at a leisurely pace to accommodate all of them as they gradually, tentatively reach out for connection. This is a character driven piece that takes its time with its epiphanies so enjoy as you get to know everyone along the way.

the-station-agentBuy “The Station Agent” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Young friends and cine-fans, if you watch only one American film from the 70’s then you can’t go too far wrong with Director Martin Scorsese’s 1976 urban classic, Taxi Driver”. And if you somehow haven’t seen it…the time is now! Set in the hothouse jungle of a 70’s summertime NYC, Screenwriter Paul Schrader’s story of one lonely man’s gradual descent into dangerous isolation is a fiercely riveting ride that will immediately resonate with any city dweller, anywhere, anytime. A young Robert DeNiro is Travis Bickle, a tense, troubled and socially awkward, spiritually disconnected cabbie searching for meaning in his otherwise empty void of existence. Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, a 13 year-old Jodie Foster and an absolutely ravishing Cybil Shepard are just a few of the unforgettable characters he encounters as he pinballs around the mean streets desperately seeking his true purpose and meaningful direction even as he inexorably slides through the NYC cracks. This is a film that scorches through every moment until it ignites and burns to a climax that remains shocking even after all these years. Watch for the deeply disturbing cameo from the Director himself as a vengeance-fantasizing cuckold passenger splitting at the seams. And please bask in every single moment of music legend Bernard Hermann’s timeless, lush, evocative score (his last) that propels the film with its spirit and will haunt your memory with its darkly romantic soul.

  • And for a much gentler tale of disconnection and loneliness in a much different city, try Writer/Director Sofia Coppola’s 2003, Lost in Translation”. The priceless Bill Murray and the voluptuous Scarlet Johansson are two mismatched foreigners (He-old and jaded, She-young and confused) who gravitate towards each other as they’re set adrift while trying desperately to stay afloat in the vibrant, urban ocean of modern day Tokyo then gratefully find soulful connection in each other’s company. Laughs are frequent as Murray, in full on fish-out-of-water mode, struggles to center himself as he carefully falls in love with the beautiful girl of his youthful dreams and Johansson is a perfect picture of inspiring youth and delectable beauty. Coppola’s empathetic script deftly captures the casually flowing rhythms of two star-crossed lovers pushing and pulling towards and away from each other even as they cherish their time and yearn for more. A film about loneliness and the delicacy of connection that will make you fall in love with the human spirit all over again.

HULU PLUS:

  • Apple TV Adult Pick of the Week– Season 2 of NBC’s masterful, engrossing, shockingly visceral and cinematically visual series, Hannibal”, is now available on Hulu Plus and you don’t want to miss the opener, “Kaiseki”. Our official mancrush Mads Mickellsen absolutely inhabits the mantle of the infamous Dr. Lecter like a gleaming crown and seamlessly brings his own level of sophisticated sexycool mixed with disturbing, freaky fun to the Bad Doctor. Hugh Dancy is a thoroughly damaged Agent Will Graham, Laurence Fishburne is FBI Agent-in-Charge Jack Crawford and if you make any Apple TV choice this week then check the wild free-for-all brawl between Dr. Lecter and Crawford at the beginning of the episode. WOW! Fantastic throwdown in any medium so bravo to NBC and Producer Bryan Fuller for raising the bar so high. This series is an amazing, visually stunning accomplishment and not to be missed.

Hannibal - Season 1Buy “Hannibal” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Apple TV Family Pick of the Week– It’s a TV kind of week at Hulu and this week Fox has debuted a very rare gift from the Gods of Television with, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey”. Host and rockstar astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson takes us on a thrilling journey into our world of Big Questions and even some of the answers of our human existence as a tiny part of this fascinating universe we call Life. And trips don’t get much better than that! The excellent and very accessible opener is one that the entire family will enjoy whether you happen to be an avid fans of science or not. Thanks Professor and thanks to the late, great Carl Sagan as well for keeping the torch of knowledge and scientific inquiry burning strong.

  • Ready for some gut-wrenching, whiplashing horror thrills, South Korean-Style? Then steel yourself for Writer/Director Jeong-ho Lee’s 2010 pulse-pounder, Bestseller”. Jeong-hwa Eom is a soon-to-be-single mom and professionally rebounding novelist caught in yet another plagiarism scandal after her newest bestselling novel, to her disbelief, appears to have been previously published a decade earlier. She returns with her daughter to the remote retreat where her ideas originated to clear her professional reputation but…let’s just say things take some decidedly nasty turns. The canny plot plays some subversive games with truth and fiction all the way and the twists and turns will likely surprise you. We told you so…

iTunes:

  • This week crack open iTunes and treat yourself to some of the best that the world of cinema has to offer with the Oscar Nominated Live Action Short Films 2014. A great collection and global selection of shorts that includes Finland’s, “Do I have to Take Care of Everything?”, the UK’s “The Voorman Problem”, France’s, “Just Before Losing Everything”, Spain’s, “That Wasn’t Me” and 2014’s Oscar Winning Live Action Short, Helium”, from Denmark and Director Anders Walter. iTune it up with any and all of these fresh, excellent choices and enjoy!
helium
  • Youth in peril is the subject of this thoughtful and mature 2013 feature from Writer/Director Deston Crettin (who expanded it from his original 2008 short) and, Short Term 12”, takes you for a rough ride to the finish. Brie Larson is a mostly adult counselor at an adolescent treatment center who struggles to build meaningful relationships with her “kids” or actually help her wounded flock even as she tries to juggle her own life with her own not-so-solid relationships. Harsh reality is wrapped up tightly in the young hope on display and lessons are won and lost along the way as this film turns in ways you can’t expect. And that is a very good thing.

short-term-12Buy “Short Term 12” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Now for a film that’s quite a bit more predictable and a lot easier to mix with your popcorn, this week iTunes has 2013’s, 300”, from Director Zack Snyder. Yes, the sequel is opening now (in case you just landed on this planet and didn’t know) so why not review this visually fresh and robustly energetic original that was faithfully based on the popular Frank Miller graphic novel. A ferociously committed cast that includes Gerald Butler, Dominic West and an unheralded Michael Fassbender as Spartan warriors at the legendary Battle of Thermopylae hurl themselves at this pulpy material and everyone, including a fierce Lena Headley, leaps from the screen with just the proper amount of hammy machismo to make this film come to vivid life. “This is madness…” “THIS…IS…SPARTA!”

That’s all for this week so save us a seat on the couch and we’ll bring the beer!

The dreary winter doldrums are hanging on tight around here so now more than ever, we may all be in desperate need of some Apple TV warmth and comfort. And if the bitter cold has you stuck inside this weekend we certainly hope our weekly Pix Picks deliver all the toasty heat you need to recharge in front of your electronic fireplace.

NETFLIX:

  • If you’ve somehow managed to miss this all-time classic then I envy you because this week Netflix is offering one of legendary Director Stanley Kubrick’s finest of his many fine, groundbreaking moviemaking accomplishments, 1964’s Dr. Strangelove (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)”. right here for your mind blowing pleasure.  If you happened to be born after 1980 and didn’t realize they made movies before then, where do we begin to describe the Bronx Native’s work of sly genius? Well, it’s primarily a very dark farce (with George C. Scott in a rare comic role as a gung-ho, hawk General Buck Turgidson and World Class chameleon Peter Sellers gut-bustlingly funny in 3 very different roles) set in a disturbingly realistic world of Cold War era politics that’s thrown into utter chaos by one very loose screw (a frighteningly believable Sterling Hayden as General Jack D. Ripper). Kubrick pulls out all the stops (the War Room scenes alone are a feast for the eyes even as you fall apart laughing) and leads us merrily down the path to nuclear annihilation with a wicked glee and an absolute abandon that only he can frame. Sellers’ comic chops were never sharper and the whole film takes you on a wild ride straight to bomber pilot Slim Pickens’ final wild ride. YEEEEE-HAAAAAW!

  • Can you handle that crazy little thing called Love in all its wondrous forms? Then load up 2013’s, Blue is the Warmest Color”, from Director Abdel Kechiche and available for the first time this week on Netflix. This controversial film lovingly depicts the ravages of young amour between its protagonists, Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos, in all their gritty, sensuous, searing, maddening glory. This is a raw coming-of-age film that doesn’t shy away from the fluidity of female sexuality or its magnetic power to enrapture. And at just under 3 hours running time, that’s a lot of rapture.  WARNING: This film depicts scenes of explicit sexuality and is strictly FOR ADULTS ONLY. You lucky, lucky dogs!

blue-is-the-warmest-colorBuy “Blue is the Warmest Color” on DVD from Amazon.

  • And now for something completely different…Feeling as giddy as a 10 year-old hopped up on Coca-Cola and candy bars? Well, are you ready to at least laugh like one? Then check the balls out comedy that broke the mold, 1980’s irresistible Airplane!”. Sold to the studios as a “disaster flick” parody, the Zucker Brothers (Dave and Jerry) and Director Jim Abrahams took the raw anarchic spirit of a 70’s “Mad” magazine, crammed it into their cameras then blasted it to crazy life all over your screen. Mere words simply cannot begin to describe the non-stop barrage of goofball hilarity that’s shamelessly machine-gunned at the audience with not a moment of cease fire on the all-out comic assault. There’s just so many great performances from the committed cast of comic cliff divers that there’s just too much to mention so just turn ON, tune IN…then just laugh your damn ass off! “Surely you can’t be serious?”  “I’m completely serious…and don’t call me Shirley.”

HULU PLUS:

  • Available this week for the first time on Hulu is the criminally overlooked 1995 noir from Writer/Director Carl Franklin, Devil in a Blue Dress”. Denzel Washington stars as “Easy” Rawlins, a fledging Private Eye in post WWII Los Angeles hired to find an innocent femme who has somehow disappeared into the shadows and whose enigmatic motives and dangerous company turn out to be more fatale than at first expected. Based on the best-selling book (and series) from author Walter Mosley, the stellar cast (Tom Sizemore, Jennifer Beals, Don Cheadle and Maury Chaykin) bring Mosley’s prose and vivid characters to canny, crackling life as a reluctant Easy gets unwittingly and unwillingly drawn into a taut mystery until he’s backed into a corner and is forced to come out fighting. Like all great noirs, it’s all about One Man wrestling with a world of corruption while trying to walk his own line with Director Franklin and his riveting cast of characters nailing it down from start to finish.

devil-in-a-blue-dressBuy “Devil in a Blue Dress” on DVD from Amazon.

  • One for the Adults– This one may be a little too close to home for some (right now) but no one can accuse Writer/Director Woody Allen of attempting to mask his personal peccadilloes in 1992’s, Husbands and Wives”. Woody and then-inamorata (ouch) Mia Farrow play a Manhattan couple whose marriage is thrown for a loop when their best friend’s marriage, Sydney Polack and the always electric Judy Davis, suddenly and rapidly unravels down the road to divorce. It is a comedy and you will laugh but…it’s gonna feel a bit uncomfortable now, isn’t it? But try not to think too much and instead just enjoy the sparkling script along with the nervy emotion on display as things spin out of control for Woody’s regularly very under control, upper crusty social climbers of his beloved Manhattan jungle.

husbands-and-wivesBuy “Husbands and Wives” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Yes, Liam Neeson is certainly the flavor-of-the-month action hero of late (for good or ill…discuss) but if you feel like setting your Apple TV back to 1995 then check a truly rousing adventure from Director Michael Caton-Jones with Liam as the title character of Scotland’s, Rob Roy”. The forever gorgeous Jessica Lange is his lady love, Tim Roth his hated enemy and John Hurt is the Big Baddie in this Robin Hood-like tale of an honest man forced to fight as an outlaw who discovers he may just be good at it after all. Set in the 1700’s, don’t be deterred by the period trappings as the flick boldly stands up as a fantastic action film in its own right as well as  featuring some of the most exciting swordfights (remember them?) you’re likely to ever find anywhere. A slam-bang tale of Scotland that’ll have you root, root, rooting for the Home Team!

iTunes:

  • It’s a bit late for Oscar night but iTunes is ripe with Winners this week including one from the Coen Brothers (Best Director), 2007’s Best Motion Picture and one of our personal faves, No Country for Old Men Based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel, the Coen boys grab this ball of rich source material and take off! Yes, Tommy Lee Jones is dead perfect as one of the men from the title but he’s surrounded by a stunning cast that tears the lid off these characters then serves them up raw and real. Where do we start? Josh Brolin is steely perfection as a Good Man who makes one crucial misjudgment that sets the wheels of this heart hammering plot into motion and brother…the wheels start spinning fast! Javier Bardem (Best Supporting Actor) is unforgettable as a nightmare force of fate with a too-clever-for-his-own-good Woody Harrelson, a properly slimy Stephen Root and a heartbreaking Kelly McDonald as just three of the obstacles in his path. Watch for the earthy, urgent and deeply moving Barry Corbin cameo (as a philosophically minded Uncle Ellis) near the end as Sheriff Ed Tom struggles mightily to figure out his place in his disturbing, brave new world. NCfOM is as perfect as movies get…and it gets better every time.

no-country-for-old-menBuy “No Country for Old Men” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Also available this week is 2013’s, Nebraska”, from Director Alexander Payne with the always rock solid Bruce Dern as a possibly dementia addled old man on a quixotic, cross-country quest for gold at the end of his long life’s rainbow. Will Forte flexes his dramatic chops as the dutiful Son coming along for the ride and fresh, fiery octogenarian newcomer June Squib is sizzling as the Wife who has long since tired of saving the men in her life from their foolishness. A subtle American portrait painted in shades of lustrous grey that we all recognize even as we struggle to see the light.

nebraskaBuy “Nebraska” on DVD from Amazon.

  • And, yes, the Big Winner is here for your viewing edification if you’re ready to take on this tale of human brutality and social evil. The Academy Award Best Motion Picture of 2013, based on the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup, 12 Years a Slave”, from Director Steve McQueen is available for download. History doesn’t get much darker than Northup’s recounting of his horrific kidnapping and subsequent enslavement and McQueen’s beautiful visuals eerily add to the pain and terror involved in the degradation and deprivation of actor Chiwetel Ejiofor as he’s hurled down a dehumanizing rabbit hole of despair. Benedict Cumberbatch is insidiously revolting as a casually “kind” slave owner before Michael Fassbender’s committed performance as a passionately corrupted slaver hammers home the horror even further in just one of the stops along Northup’s trail of tears. This won’t be the easiest film to watch but McQueen and Ejiofor make Northup’s terrible journey echo in your heart and, especially, your human soul.

That’s all for this week folks. And hey…where is Spring anyway?

It’s time to get your designer gear working Ladies while all you Gentlemen out there brush those tuxedoes because Sunday is Academy Awards Night and we expect you to rock that red carpet all night long! So in keeping with the back-slapping party atmosphere we’ve included some of our favorite Oscar recipients from the past in this week’s Pix Picks for your viewing pleasure. Oscar may not always get it right but he consistently delivers the great Goods so enjoy and pour that wine!

NETFLIX:

  • Oscar Pick of the Week– Set your Apple TV way back to 1969 and dig this timeless western adventure from Director George Roy Hill, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. We know that BCatSK didn’t win Best Picture  (“Midnight Cowboy” took home the big prize that great year) but it went on to essentially create an entire subgenre (the “Buddy” movie) and its unmistakable influence still holds sway. In our humble opinion the onscreen chemistry and effortless repartee between co-stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the title anti-heroes remains unmatched in its ease, wit and genuine affection and the slyly subversive plot (Butch and Sundance spend a great deal of the film running away and/or hiding out) altered the modern Western forever. A gorgeous, glorious elegy to a fast fading wild west and a devilishly charming look at two of its most notorious outlaws. Gentlemen, it just doesn’t get much better than Katherine Ross’s intro (those lips) and Ladies…we hear that the lead duo are also pretty easy on the eyes so enjoy the ManCandy while your man keeps laughing all the way to the end. And what an ending!

  • One for the Adults– If you’re feeling blue and ready for a downbeat drama with empathy to spare, try 2009’s overlooked effort from Director Kirk Jones, Everybody’s Fine”. This melancholy story of an elderly recent widower’s (a restrained Robert DeNiro) somewhat scattered attempt to reconcile with his estranged adult children (Sam Rockwell, Drew Barrymore and Kate Beckinsale) will no doubt strike a chord with those of us who grew up with mostly absent fathers. An imperfect but honest, open and gently lyrical film about some deeply imperfect but heartfelt facts of life that all of us can easily relate to at our most human level. Remember the tissue paper because you may need it.

everybodys-fine-2009Buy “Everybody’s Fine” on DVD from Amazon.

  • For our money 2003’s threequel, American Wedding”, is the comedy grand slam for the beloved “American Pie” series and the best work yet from this effervescent ensemble cast that we’ve all grown to know and love. Director Jesse Dylan knocks it out of the park for an all grown-up Jim’s (the lovable Jason Biggs) big wedding day to his One-and-Only Bandcamp Girl (the even more lovable Allyson Hannigan) with his collection of quirky friends all there to keep the comic balls rolling. Seann William Scott absolutely crushes it as the obnoxious yet somehow lovable social miscreant Stifler, and comic vet Eugene Levy steals the show and our hearts with his pitch perfect portrayal of the endlessly sympathetic Dad-we-all-wish-we-had. So smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, pop some corks and prepare to laugh your asses off because the Gang’s all here and they’re peaking.

american-wedding-2003Buy “American Wedding” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Apple TV Pick of the Week– For our North American Friends…it’s finally, finally, finally arrived. Yep, the final 8 episodes of perhaps the best American TV drama to come down the pipe since forever, Breaking Bad”, is here this week and we are officially GEEKED! If, like us, you’ve been patiently waiting what seems like forever (all while rigorously dodging the ubiquitous spoilers) to find out what happens to the monstrous Walter White’s rotten empire then this is your Netflix gift from Apple TV heaven. Your standing orders are- Invite your friends, confiscate the cellies, crack the brews and then prepare for passionate debate. BrBa creator Vince Gilligan…Thanks for doing it up right!

HULU PLUS:

  • Oscar Pick of the Week– 1950’s, Rashomon”, from Director Akira Kurosawa was late to Oscar’s party, winning in 1952 as Best Foreign Film, but it packed one hell of a powerful punch upon landing that’s still felt today. This masterful film from peerless master Kurosawa influenced generations of film makers with his groundbreaking use of editing and stunning handheld camera work, telling a riveting crime story of rape and murder from the shifting perspectives of all four players involved in the terrifying ordeal. The alternate perceptions of the identical “reality” give the viewer a uniquely human glimpse at our universal strengths and weaknesses as the dramatic point of view whirls around all of the flawed human beings caught up in terrible circumstances. A razor sharp look at the shadowy truth of life set in a beautiful light that illuminates the soul.

rashomon-1950Buy “Rashomon” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Our B-Movie Pick of the Week– Movies just don’t get much rowdier, raunchier, sweatier, saltier or sexier than 1989’s, Road House”, from Director Rowdy Herrington. 80’s heartthrob Patrick Swayze plays Dalton, a Zen Master bar bouncer (yes, you read that correctly) hired to handle all the down-n-dirty action at a hard rocking honkytonk bar. There’s a local love interest (luscious Kelly Lynch as the town doctor), a house band blues musician (Jeff Healey in his film debut), good guys (a perfectly cast Sam Elliot and his All-World moustache) and, of course, the Bid Bad Guy (Ben Gazzara) who wants to control the whole town and who comes into direct conflict with Swayze’s Dalton. Great music, great fights, gratuitous nudity and plenty of overheated dialogue make this a B-Movie classic that will live forever! “I want you to be nice until it’s time to not be nice.” Dig that bouncer Zen, Baby!

road-house-1989Buy “Road House” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Now ready for some big laughs to go along with your freaky, queasy, hammy horror fun? Then load up 1981’s, An American Werewolf in London”, from Writer/Director John Landis. Landis nailed the perfect comedy/horror balance in this slick story of two American backpackers who run into some very hairy trouble in jolly old England. One (a wry Griffin Dunne) is killed but that doesn’t end his screen time and the other (fresh-faced David Naughton) goes on to deal with an ancient curse as he tries to woo a comely Brit lass (a gorgeous Jenny Agutter) desperately trying her best to help him. Fantastic F/X and brilliant make-up effects by Master Artist Rick Baker still stand the test of time (and that’s a lot of time) and give this grimly goofy tale a real kick. A great time for Boy and Girls of all ages!

iTunes:

  • Oscar Pick of the Week– We’ve mentioned it before but you just can’t go wrong with 2012’s, Silver Linings Playbook”, from Writer/Director David O. Russell. This straight-on look at the troubled paths of some troubled personalities as they struggle to come to grips with regular life and extraordinary love won an armful of Oscars (including Best Picture) and as you watch you can see why. Pretty boy Bradley Cooper (Best Actor) sheds his skin to become the tortured obsessive who’s trying, but failing, to right his ship as his pained family watches him sink under his own mental waves. Everybody’s fantasy GF Jennifer Laurence (Best Actress) enters the picture as a young widow carrying a heavy weight of her own and then tormented worlds collide. With Robert DeNiro (Best Supporting) as the compulsive but caring Dad and a knockout performance from Jacki Weaver as the loving Mom trying desperately to save everyone from themselves.

  • Chick Flick of the Week– Hard to believe that it’s been 13 years but Bridget Jones’s Diary”, is back to entrance romance lovers everywhere. Written by Helen Fielding (and based on her smash best seller) and directed by Sharon Maguire this film hits all the romance targets, rings all the bells and blows all the whistles with the deadly charming cast (Hugh Grant and Colin Firth for the ladies) and Renee Zellweger scores consistently as the slightly zaftig everygirl figuring it all out. Pour that vino and rally around for some dreamy romantic fun, Bridget Gals!

  • One for the Kids– Disney’s 2010, Tangled”, takes on the Rapunzel fairy tale and gives it a charming update with an empowered girl hero at the center and set on a grand adventure. This amped up, action version is designed especially for the little girls in your home but the boys will doubtless enjoy it all as well. Take a break from parenting and let the Kids be mesmerized for all of 100 stress free minutes. Thanks again Disney!

Fellow flick fanatics, if like us you’re starting to suffer from Winter Olympic Fatigue Syndrome then we’ve got the ideal weekend therapy for you. Just light up your Apple TV, tune into any of this week’s Pix Picks then let the soothing waves of relief wash all over your body. Activating your brain is optional but highly recommended, indulgent pleasure is absolutely mandatory.

NETFLIX:

  • Ready for a splash of refreshing B-Movie joy to start your weekend off? Then load up on Writer/Director Dan Coscarelli’s uniquely wild, wacky and potently passionate sci-fi/comedy/thriller, Bubba Ho-Tep”. Based on a Joe Lansdale short story this mad mash-up is almost impossible to describe and absolutely impossible to resist once you tune into this deliriously giddy tale featuring the awesomely cool Bruce Campbell as a certainly crazy senior citizen (who may or may not be Elvis) stuck in a decaying retirement home with veteran master actor Ossie Davis (who may or may not be JFK) as his equally loony roommate. Both these unhinged residents and their unfortunate cellies are being stalked by a mysterious force from beyond that appears to be an Egyptian Mummy reincarnated and on a mission of vengeance. Yes, it’s a comedy…and so much more! If the soulful ending doesn’t bring a tear to your eye then check your pulse ‘cuz you may be dead.

  • One for The Kids– If you need a 22 minute break (imagine what you two could do with all that luxurious time) from your little ones and the kids need a dedicated Lego fix that doesn’t involve schlepping to any theaters then check 2013’s, LEGO: Marvel Super Heroes: Maximum Overload”, from Director Greg Richardson. Get on that express Lego train (your kids undoubtedly are already onboard) and enjoy this wicked cool, gloriously goofy and just plain fun adventure involving some of Marvel’s most popular superheroes, LEGO-STYLE! There’ more inventive imagination and whipsmart wit in these 22 entertainment packed minutes then most films 3 times that length so go ahead and get your money’s worth guilt free!

  • One for the Adults– Finally. And for a nitty-gritty look at the games adults play, check Director Marcus Baldini’s 2011 drama, Confessions of a Brazilian Call Girl”. The ravishing Deborah Secco disappears into the role of a tormented teenager who abandons her loveless adopted home in search of something all her own then nonchalantly settles into the World’s Oldest Profession. Clumsy, skittish and lacking confidence but possessing a nubile, absolutely killer body, this raw rookie becomes a local hit at her low rent brothel which leads to…complications. What ensues, despite the cheesy title, is a sharp, realistic and refreshingly clear-eyed look at the way that actual adults (on both sides of the bargain) might actually handle the play-for-pay realities of sex work. Young “Bruna” (her call girl moniker) slowly evolves into a sophisticated entrepreneur yet (Spoiler Alert!) true self-fulfillment eludes her as she bites hard on the “fast, easy money” bait.  WARNING: This film displays GRAPHIC SEXUAL SITUATIONS and is intended FOR ADULTS ONLY PLEASE. So don’t let the kiddies see this one unless you parents out there want to answer about a thousand uncomfortable questions you’ve been hoping to avoid for the rest of your lives.

HULU PLUS:

  • Ready for a hardcore thriller that’s not afraid to reach into the darkness and take a keen look at true evil? Then load up 2009’s Original, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo”, from Director Niels Arden Oplev. Noomi Rapace is “the Girl” of the title and her Lisbeth Salander crackles to harsh life every moment she commands the screen as the wounded hacker on a mission, giving no quarter and taking no prisoners even as she tentatively reaches out for a more human connection. Michael Nyqvist is the disgraced but dogged reporter who sets the wheels in motion when he’s hired to get to the bottom of a 40-year old murder with rotten roots that reach even deeper than he’s prepared to go. Lisbeth fearlessly takes them there and this unflinchingly urgent film packs one hell of a wallop. WARNING: ADULTS ONLY PLEASE as the story involves vile human corruption and sexual abuse that is graphic and shocking if essential to the reality of this taut thriller. Now if you can handle more harsh darkness then load the rest of the Trilogy (2010’s, “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest”, all based on late author Stieg Larsson’s global best-selling series) for a Hulu Plus movie marathon. Just remember to give yourself some time to recover between the heavy shots to the psyche.

  • And speaking of originals…arriving this week is the first (and still the best in our opinion) in the most popular series of action films based on video games, 2002’s Resident Evil”. How has this series remained so popular worldwide despite its ever decreasing creative returns? Well, this original has a lot to do with it and the delectably delicious Milla Jovovich whipping ass and taking names is, we suspect, the remainder of the equation. But this initial effort is a stripped down fighting machine of a movie that slams down the pedal almost immediately and then keeps it there all the way to the genuinely pulse pounding finish. The always entertaining (and easy on the eyes) Michelle Rodriguez provides back-up muscle for Milla in this one and Director Paul W.S. Anderson does not drop the action ball in this 1st Rate cult smash. Now if only he could’ve squeezed in one more shower scene…

resident-evilBuy “Resident Evil” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Ever wanted to ride a rocket? Then get on board 2009’s rocking doc, James May at the Edge of Space”. Yes, the title does pretty much tell the story as our Top Gear cowboy travels to the USA, jumps into the saddle, rides a jet-fueled bronco into the stratosphere and takes one for the team. Or, as we like to say around here- PRETTY MUCH LIVES EVERY YOUNG BOY’S CHILDHOOD DREAM!

iTunes:

  • If you missed it in the theater (especially the local IMAX) then I guessed we both missed out on a thrilling cinematic experience but this week you can set your Apple TV to blaze with Director Alfonso Cauron’s 2013 mind blower, Gravity”. This spare, bare space adventure features George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as two astronauts taking care of business far, far, far from home who encounter some difficulties at their workplace then have to deal with them as best they can before they can return home. Needless to say, when your workplace is in earth orbit…things can get complicated. Check it before Oscar night so you’ll know where all the awards are going.

GravityBuy “Gravity” on DVD from Amazon.

  • And if you want your adventures a little more down to earth and even leaner still, then load up 2013’s unfortunately overlooked, All Is Lost”, from Writer/Director J.C. Chandor. Oscar may not remember this 2013 effort but you will if you tune in to watch screen legend Robert Redford give a Master class in acting in this almost dialogue-free film about one man’s desperate struggle to stay alive in the hands of an unforgiving, unyielding and awesomely elemental Mother Nature. An absolutely riveting adventure into the darkest of the dark nights of the soul. Powerful, moving and unforgettable.

all-is-lostBuy “All Is Lost” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Our Winter Olympic Pick of the Week– If you’re up for more of the frigid weather fun then climb onboard once again and enjoy the ride with 1993’s John Turtletaub directed, Cool Runnings”. The late, great John Candy is the loser coach of an unheralded (to say the very least) Jamaican Bobsled Team that first has to figure out exactly what a “bobsled” is before they can dream their Olympic dreams. This is a refreshingly original, high energy comedy that will have the whole family laughing along with Doug E. Fresh, Leon, Malik Yoba and Paul Couer as the clueless bobsledding athletes stuck with an over-the-hill coach but with everyone in possession of giant hearts and a drive to be all they can be. Funny, inspirational and loaded with great music too! Go for the Gold!

That’s all for this week gracious readers so please press pause on that Apple TV until we get there with the beer.

Greetings Valentine Lovers and welcome to the strictly indoor weekend of lovely love that you’ve been planning for months. What’s that you say? You don’t actually have any real V-Day plans? Well then friend, relax because we’ve got you covered with a sexy assortment of full tilt romance to jumpstart your engines and get your weekend moving in the right direction. Plus some other good stuff thrown in at no extra charge so just  fire up that Apple TV and enjoy.

NETFLIX:

  • If you’re in the mood for some joyful, hearty music liberally spiced with lots of healthy laughs then try 2012’s inventive, indie sci-fi comedy/musical effort, The History of Future Folk”, by co-directors Jeremy Walker and J. Anderson Mitchell. Musician/actors Nils d’Aulaire and Jay Klaitz play two different aliens (with very different agendas) from the same planet sent to earth (Brooklyn, specifically) on two very different missions. The first falls head over heels in love with Earth music and subsequently alters his plans, the second falls for the music as well, gets tangled up with the Law (and specifically a luminous April Hernandez) and then…well, let’s just say that things get complicated. An engagingly fun and open-hearted film all around that was clearly shot on a shoestring budget but is always generously infused with the kind of raw passion and true faith that you’ll find refreshing, endearing and completely entertaining. Try it, ‘cuz you’re gonna like it. HONDO!

  • Classic Valentine Pick of the Week– For that really bad Good Girl in your life, blow the dust off 1950’s Hollywood-behind-the-curtain expose, Sunset Boulevard”, from Writer/Director Billy Wilder. Nobody skewers the star machine as deeply, sharply or wickedly as Wilder and this dark, moody, brooding black comedy/drama noir punctures the Hollywood balloon mercilessly, gleefully revealing the wretched illness that infects the suckers trying to keep it inflated. Penniless writer and ruggedly handsome heel William Holden is diligently dodging debt when he stumbles across a decaying old mansion and into the lair of a faded movie legend, the supremely wild, weird and radiantly radioactive “Norma Desmond” and that’s when the “fun” begins. Former Hollywood Idol herself, screen legend Gloria Swanson brings the lost, lonely, unhinged but imperiously proud Norma to crackling life as a “STAR” clinging desperately to her dream of a “return” to glory and also, we learn, just as desperately clinging to her sanity. Great Silent Film Director Erich Von Stroheim demonstrates a stern, masterful control as Norma Desmond’s “Manservant” Max whose main job is to try to maintain all of her fragile illusions while canny cameos (Hedda Hopper, Buster Keaton, Cecil B. DeMille) slyly wink at us from Wilder’s camera. This is a queasy but perfectly corrupted Valentine kiss of a film for a perfectly corrupt industry wrapped in desperate love with itself. Or as Norma regally informs her broken down rent-a-stud- “I AM big…it’s the pictures that got small!”

sunset-boulevard-1950Buy “Sunset Boulevard” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Our Valentine’s Day Treat– The Romeo & Juliet reboots just don’t get any better or anymore original than 1961’s vibrant, vital and still explosively entertaining, Academy Award Winning Best Picture, West Side Story”, from Director Robert Wise, Choreographer Jerome Robbins and Musical Maestro Leonard Bernstein. Come for the true romance and stay for the incendiary dance numbers or the show-stopping songs (“Jet Song”, “America”, “Cool”, “Maria”, “Somewhere”) that drive this tragedy to beautiful new heights. Just check the first 5 minutes (shot on location for the first time for a musical) and if you’re not hooked then you get your money back! GET COOL BOY!

  • One for the Kids– Kick back and let the Young ‘uns check the work of a true Anime Genius with 50 great episodes (20 minutes per) of, Astro Boy”, by Japanese Anime Legend Osamu Tezuka. Dubbed in English, this original work is a vibrant, beautiful and lively entry into the world of one of Anime’s greatest artists and a fun, thrilling and thoughtful sci-fi series to boot. They’ll LOVE IT and so will you.

astro-boyBuy “Astro Boy” on DVD from Amazon.

HULU PLUS:

  • Classic Valentine’s Day Treat– Most viewers probably don’t consider 1976’s Academy Award Winning Best Picture, Rocky”, from Director John Avildsen and Writer/Star Sylvester Stallone as a traditional “love story” but we do. Of course almost everyone knows this underdog tale but if you haven’t seen it for a decade or so then give the very tender and affectionate romance at the heart of it another shot for a surprisingly real and refreshing look at love. Talia Shire is brilliant as the mousy introvert browbeaten by life and afraid of the world and Stallone delivers a Brandoesque mix of tough-yet-tender-inside as the conflicted thug who quietly but sincerely wants a chance to love her. And, as in all great romances, both of them grow and then transform into greater versions of themselves because of their blossoming love for each other. A great film and a great romance that really matters in the end.

  • The acting world tragically lost a great one last week and if you’d like to see his talent on display once more then check out 2011’s indie effort, Jack Goes Boating”, directed by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman and based on a stage play by Writer Robert Glaudini. This careful, charming and ultimately effective romantic comedy also stars Hoffman and he demonstrates again the same skilled hand in this slow, considerate examination of two socially awkward people meeting as a result of their friendship with another couple and the tender mercies that can bloom because of chance and circumstance. Thanks PSH!

iTunes:

  • No doubt that this film will be heard from at the upcoming 2014 Academy Awards ceremony so now’s your chance to take a look at 2013’s, Dallas Buyers Club”, from Director Jean-Marc Valee. Red hot Matthew McConaughey stars as an 80’s Texas cowpoke stricken with the AIDS virus who, when handed his death sentence, decides to fight back in any way he can instead. Jared Leto gives his all as an equally resilient if emotionally fragile victim desperately looking to turn the tide and Jennifer Garner is a caring, daring doctor on their side all the way. A powerhouse of a film that will make you feel glad to be there and especially glad to be here.

dallas-buyers-clubBuy “Dallas Buyers Club” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Our Valentine Pick of the Week– 2013’s, The Broken Circle Breakdown”, from Belgian Director Felix van Groeningen. Johan Heldenburgh and Veerle Baetens are inspirational as a tragic couple looking to heal themselves through the power of their bluegrass music. Soaring musical numbers and urgent performances from the leads make this a difficult but memorable Valentine that reminds us how much love, and music, matters in the end.

the-broken-circle-breakdownBuy “The Broken Circle Breakdown” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Ready to shake off the sads? Then laugh it up (sparking it up is considered optional but very highly recommended) with prolific Director/Star Ben Stiller’s brilliant meta-comedy, 2008’s, Tropic Thunder”, Gut busting performances all around (Jack Black, RDJ, Steve Coogan and Tom Cruise in an hysterically off-the-rails cameo) fuel this high energy satire about a bunch of clueless actors trapped in a movie that gets trapped in the very real world. RDJ’s take on assholic Aussie Actor Kirk Lazarus (we’re looking at you Russell Crowe), who makes the ultimate sacrifice for his craft, is a performance that will live forever in a film chock full of bubbling creative energy and outright lunacy. This is comedy gold so go ahead and dig it!

That’s all for this week so spread the love thick and make sure you get those kisses in before she recovers from all the chocolate!

Bad-Grandpa-1

Ready to fire up those Apple TV’s with this week’s red hot Pix Picks? Well, we got ‘em and we even threw in a couple of Valentines Day warning shots just to remind you that the ominous wave of commercial romance is already building and is absolutely heading your way. Your move.

NETFLIX:

  • One for the Kids– Landing on NF for the first time this week, check 2013’s delightful DreamWorks animated adventure, The Croods”. A fast, fun, uplifting story of family loyalty and adventure and you get a genuinely moving coming-of-age (prehistoric version) tale for surly teens to boot. Great voice work from both Nicolas Cage as the perpetually terrified Cro-Magnon out to protect his Crood brood at all costs and Emma Stone as his curious teenage daughter who, to his great dismay, wants more than anything to explore that same big, bad world. Catherine Keener supplies the caring voice of the faithful, loving and ever hopeful matriarch and Ryan Reynolds’s vocals more than fill the bill as the slightly more evolved (and super cute) Neanderthal-with-a-Plan. Don’t be afraid to sit in and enjoy this one with the kids because you will laugh at least as much as they do. Just don’t let them see you getting choked up at the end or they’ll never let you forget it.

the-croodsBuy “The Croods” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Classic Pick of the WeekItalian Master Sergio Leone’s 1964 stroke of spaghetti western genius that stylistically spun the genre like a top, the gorgeously glorious, A Fistful of Dollars”, has landed at NF for your weekend enjoyment. Yes, a young, unknown American actor named Clint Eastwood dons the poncho and smokes the cigar for the very first time as the gunslinging “Man-with-No-Name” who is set against rival factions of hoods, carpetbaggers and gangster/soldiers locked in a blood feud all while desperately searching for the spoils of war. Ennio Morricone created the haunting and unforgettable soundtrack which heralded a trilogy of westerns that changed the genre forever and made Eastwood a star. And we still love the sound of those pistols!

a-fistful-of-dollarsBuy “A Fistful of Dollars” on DVD from Amazon.

  • And one more classic (this time from the 80’s) for anyone looking for some freaky fun filled with a zombified good time, load up 1985’s, Day of The Dead”, by none other than the Man-Who-Gave-Birth-to-a-Genre, Director George Romero. A fantastic script and gory, gooey F/X from make-up Master Tom Savini highlight this slow burn, high tension horror epic that’s passionately splattered with Romero’s unique brand of dark humor and anchored by his verite’ cult sensibilities. The capable cast is hunkered down once again (in an actual bunker no less) and the Zombie apocalypse is in full swing as the humans do their best (and worst) to cope with the onslaught. The walking dead provide not only the creeps this time out but timely comic relief (hey, Bub) and a very real threat in this Z-Classic that is a must-see for any true fan of the genre.

day-of-the-deadBuy “Day of The Dead” on DVD from Amazon.

HULU PLUS:

  • Modern day film noir doesn’t get much better or sharper than Director Bryan Singer’s 1995 instant classic, The Usual Suspects”, available for your Apple TV cooking this week on HP. Bask in the deliciously deceptive plot once again with a cash money cast of characters (Gabriel Byrne as hardnosed gang leader Keaton, Stephen Baldwin and Kevin Pollack as wary ex-cons, Benicio Del Toro as the hilariously indecipherable Fenster and Kevin Spacey as the crippled and cowering hanger-on, “Verbal” Kint) as Chazz Palmintieri’s no-nonsense Customs Investigator attempts to get to the bottom of a shipyard arson before he quickly dips into much more than he bargained for as he (and we) slip helplessly into the treacherous quicksand plot. The late, great Pete Postelthwaite adds an elegant air of refined menace and timeless mystery as the story spins into a twisted tale of the origin, identity and whereabouts of the legendary, terrifying criminal mastermind, “Keyser Soze”. A real life gem and a modern noir to treasure.

usual-suspectsBuy “The Usual Suspects” on DVD from Amazon.

  • One for Your Mature Valentine– Yes, we romance veterans deserve to hear our voices every now and again and Writer/Director Nancy Meyers clever and engaging 2003 film concerning the daunting complications of love at a certain age, Something’s Gotta Give”, capture it all in a heartbreaking comedy that cuts all ways. Jack Nicholson stars and scores effortlessly as a rapidly aging, unmarried mogul/lothario whose physical decline leads him to an unexpected and uncomfortable convalescence at the home of his girlfriend’s mother, played by a radiant, sparkling and disarmingly soulful Diane Keaton. This untimely intrusion into the suddenly lonely divorcee’s comfortably managed life of course leads to complications for both…and everybody else too. Meyer’s really brings it with a thoughtful, real and revealing look at the twilight nights of the romance dance and all that this entails. A worthwhile date indeed.

Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta GiveBuy “Something’s Gotta Give” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Got a taste for a comedy/romance/thriller cult fave? Then check Director George Armitage’s 1997’s, Grosse Pointe Blank”. John Cusack is a hitman with a few personal issues who is halfway trying to get away from it all as he attempts to recover his mojo at his 10 year high school reunion. Minnie Driver is The-Girl-from-his-Past who he meets along the strange way to his epiphany. With fantastically sly performances from Dan Aykroyd as a fellow hitman with an agenda, Alan Arkin as Cusack’s helpful therapist and Jeremy Piven as his usual obnoxious self, this dark comedy boldly makes its bones.

grosse-pointe-blankBuy “Grosse Pointe Blank” on DVD from Amazon.

iTunes:

  • OH YEA! An unfairly overlooked, fearless and bravura performance from none other than Jackass creator himself, Johnny Knoxville, is at the center of what we feel was one of the most absurdly hilarious and inventive films of 2013, Bad Grandpa (Unrated). You know what you’re going to get from Director Jeff Tremaine and the Jackass Crew but what you may not be expecting is the sheer brilliance of many of the comic set-ups and then the committed, fearless follow-throughs from Knoxville (and Jackson Nicoll as the “Kid”) as the Elder of the title. Howlingly hilarious intrusions into the heart of Middle America ensue and the laughs just keep on coming. Try it because you WILL LOVE IT! And we ain’t sure what “unrated” includes this time but we can’t wait to find out…

bad-grandpaBuy “Bad Grandpa” on DVD from Amazon.

  • And now for something completely different…Writer/Director Woody Allen scores again, proving he’s still got chops with 2013’s, Blue Jasmine”. A dark comic look at class warfare amid the ruins of the global collapse through the hysterically skewed eyes of one of its most fragile, fractured blossoms. Kate Blanchett soars and sears as the deluded elitist forever at the center of her own storms whose life has been reduced to a grim blue collar rubble that she can’t quite wrap her wandering mind around. Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Dice Clay (yes, the Diceman) score strongly and decisively as two sympathetic but level-headed men whose lives she infects with her noxious air and Peter Saarsgaard plays a lucky lifesaver Blanchett’s Jasmine grabs hopefully. Harsh and abrasive at times, this painful dramedy may not be for everyone but everyone will definitely be able to see themselves or their loved ones somewhere in this fine effort from Woody.

blue-jasmineBuy “Blue Jasmine” on DVD from Amazon.

  • An Official Ode to Valentine’s Day– Yes, the commercial contraption of VD is on the way so to throw a bone to this most manufactured of holidays iTunes is offering up 2013’s absolutely charming, About Time”, from beloved romance Writer/Director Richard Curtis. Curtis knows his way around a romantic plot (see- “Love Actually”) and he doesn’t lose it in this frothy but satisfying tale of love…and time travel! Yes, this one did sink like a rock at the box office and gentlemen…we know what you’re thinking but don’t roll your eyes at us because this flick features that gorgeously ripe peach of a girl, Rachel MacAdams (which means we’re IN), as well as the reliably surefooted work of Bill Nighy as the Father of “the Boy”. The Boy? Who cares…we did say Rachel MacAdams, didn’t we? Right, see you there.

about-timeBuy “About Time” on DVD from Amazon.

That’s all for this frosty week so reserve your chocolates and flowers right now or at least save us a spot in the line next week.

Old Man Winter just won’t let up around this here crib zone so if the chill wind has got you down too, then here’s this week’s Apple TV Pix Picks to warm up your winter weekend blues.

NETFLIX:

  • Want to take an up close and personal look at very real pirates roaming the high seas? Then load 2012’s incisive and informative documentary, Stolen Seas”, from Director Thymaya Payne. What you’ll get here in this 90 minute examination is a raw glimpse into the heavily-armed, semi-organized and definitely daring criminal gangs from the ravaged, famine plagued, failed State of Somalia who boldly venture into the Gulf of Aden in makeshift outboard motorboats searching for unarmed ships that they can commandeer and then hold for ransom. You’ll meet a savvy Somali businessman who brokers the deals while balancing on a tightrope and his more conventional capitalist counterparts who are themselves desperate to cut their losses and avoid bloodshed or bad PR. A fascinating film that keenly observes the complex relationship between commerce and crime as well as the malignant impact that anarchic failed states with more arms than opportunities have on the larger world stage as they desperately prey on any strays within their very limited clutches.

  • Ready for some laughs? Then sit down for a naughty stand-up comedienne straight outta LA in 2013’s razor sharp, Morgan Murphy: Irish Goodbye”. Bad Girl MM sets it up and deftly knocks it all down (starting with herself of course) in this wry, wicked and acid dipped performance that totally, gleefully disregards convention and good taste. Hallelujah! Slow, casual set ups lead to wicked body punches that leave you laughing your ass off, gasping for air and trying to recover in time for the next barrage as MM maintains her steady and saucy assault. Absolutely for ADULTS WITH ADULT SENSIBILITIES ONLY! And who said chicks can’t be funny?

  • And how about some blood and guts to go along with your shits and giggles? Get over to the East End of London for 2012’s, Cockneys vs. Zombies”, from Director Mathias Hoene. Nobody does wry and dry better than the Brits and when you hand it off to the East Enders and leave it to them to save the world then what you’ve a got is a veritable comedy gold mine. Rasmus Hardiker, Michelle Ryan and Harry Treadway are just three of the hardcore but good hearted Brits slinging the cockney around as they deal with this undead menace to their lively part of the globe and try to save the day. Spot on!

HULU PLUS:

  • If you’re in the mood…yes…that mood…then load up 2009’s, 5 Senses of Eros”, a sultry, kicky, kooky and fun adult anthology about the romance dance that features a top notch host of young Korean directors and a smoking hot cast committed to bringing the sexy! We like “33rd Man” the best but check all of them for a flirty good time with your favorite cuddling partner. Or maybe a prospective new One you lucky dog! “I kiss…therefore I am.”

  • It’s been years since the attack on the WTC but the sickening images still provoke anger, pain and heartbreak and one of the most arresting is examined thoughtfully in 2007’s documentary, 9/11: The Falling Man”, from Director Henry Singer. This searing film is 80 evocative minutes of the worst and the best of that historic tragedy that transformed much of everyone’s world. No words suffice and time still fails to heal.

  • If you find yourself in need of a fun popcorn break that includes some hilarious Hong Kong hijinks involving a married couple who just happen to be superpowered (and at least somewhat superheoric) then check 2011’s superfun, Incredibly Ever After (also titled “Mr. and Mrs. Incredible”), by Director Vincent Kok. A retired couple, Louis Koo and Sandra Ng, gamely battle the vagaries of ordinary, married life along with the troublesome politics of China in this good natured and absolutely lovable feature. Campy, cheesy and colossal fun!

  • One for The Kids– Load up your Apple TV again and enjoy 2010’s, How to Train Your Dragon”, from DreamWorks and Directors Dean Deblois and Chris Sanders. Just a great job all around from DW and an instant classic for your shorties as a young boy learns how to come to grips with some of his life’s biggest challenges. With excellent voice work from Jay Baruchel, Gerald Butler, Craig Ferguson and Jonah Hill to name but a few of the talented voices that lend passion and heart to this great story.

  • Well, we’ll be damned if we could make heads or tails of what the hell is going on in this thriller/mystery from Director Christopher Nolan but 2010’s, Inception”, definitely takes you on one helluva gorgeously realized and equilibrium altering wild ride! The smoking hot cast features just about every beautiful face in the industry (DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, etc.) and if that alone doesn’t give you some wood than the freaky, state-of-the-art F/X and hallucigienic plot will at least keep your blood pumping. No idea how this film will age but for right now it’s 148 minutes of luscious eye candy for your dulled weekend senses. Don’t worry about taking bathroom breaks and losing the plot because we’ve watched it from beginning to end and still couldn’t tell you what’s what.

  • If you’re ready for a bit of intrigue then a sneaky little bit of espionage is wrapped up in 2013’s blink-and-you-missed-it, Closed Circuit”, from Director John Crowley. Eric Bana and the gorgeous Rebecca Hall are two lawyers thrown together to work on the same team who gradually discover…yea…there’s something fishy going on around here but Rebecca is in it so…we’re in. Those lips!

It’s the end of January and that means Hollywood Awards Season is in full swing with the People’s Choice, Golden Globes and the SAG’s already handed out and the Big One (Oscars) on the way so this week we thought we’d offer up at least one of the Nominees along with some other past choices. Of course we’ve also set out our usual cinematic smorgasbord for your weekend munching so go right ahead and dig in.

NETFLIX:

  • Until recently, rarely did documentary filmmakers get the opportunity to be present at the very moment history is being made but Director Jehane Noujaim’s Netflix Original and 2014 Academy Award Best Documentary Feature Nominee, The Square”, captures the volcanic eruptions inside the popular Egyptian revolt against the Mubarak regime that marked the beginning of the Arab Spring. Intense, passionate, filled with raw emotion and tempered by complex, conflicting real world realities, you don’t need to be a political animal to feel the desperate pull of humanity that’s at the center of the storm swirling in Tahrir Square. A bell was ringing the clear call to messy freedom and this film captures the sound.

  • Ready for an overlooked yet taut little thriller from Director Mike Figgis? Then check 1990’s excellent, Internal Affairs”, with Richard Gere absolutely knocking it out as a cunning, corrupt cop slithering his way to retirement as he poisons or punishes everyone in his path. Andy Garcia is the upright, uptight IA Investigator that tries to follow Gere into his treacherous LA jungle but finds the course harder to navigate (and closer to home) then he imagined as he’s teased, taunted and tested by the cagey veteran manipulator. A tense and deadly game of psychological warfare leads to a sizzling finish and one helluva, helluva great cop drama.

internal-affairsBuy “Internal Affairs” on DVD from Amazon.

  • One for the Kids– Your little guys and girls will delight at the magic of the bustling setting and wonderful mysteries that unfold inside 2011’s Academy Award Nominated, Hugo”. Allow your shorties to linger lovingly over this mesmerizing tale of one boy’s journey inside an enchanting Parisian train station and the answers he finds there to some of the questions he’s burning to know. Directed by Martin Scorsese (the One and Only) the film is beautifully rendered (originally in 3-D) and lovingly recalls the origins of the moviemaking process that is doubtless so close to Scorsese’s heart. The All World Cast includes Ben Kingsley, Sasha Baron Cohen and the great Christopher Lee as only some of the characters that Asa Butterfield (as the title kid) and Chloe Grace Moretz (as his partner-in-crime) encounter as they discover a marvelous future full of possibility. A great ride for the tweens and everyone else as well.

HugoBuy “Hugo” on DVD from Amazon.

HULU PLUS:

  • In the mood for a rollicking look at one man’s struggle with life, love and loss? Then check 2005’s quirky, kicky and cool, Game 6”, from Director Michael Hoffman and a crafty screenplay by Author Don DeLillo. Fireball Michael Keaton is a strung out playwright who skips his latest opening to see the now legendary title game of the 1986, Mets/Red Sox World Series. Yes, baseball fans will LOVE this film but non-sports fans please give it a chance ‘cuz it’s got a lot of heart and some good laughs to boot. It also has fine performances from a fantastic cast that features Griffin Dunne, the effervescent Bebe Nuewirth, the brilliant Catherine O’Hara and Robert Downey Jr. doing his usual, classic RDJ thing. BoSox fans…this one may be too painful to watch again…but for the rest of us, enjoy! And we don’t care ‘cuz we’ll always love you Billy Buck!

game6Buy “Game 6” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Got a taste for spicy Korean? Then check 2002’s scathing, twisted thriller, Bad Guy”, from Director Ki-duk Kim. This harsh and unforgiving morality play sets a mysterious, mute pimp on a path to use and defile an innocent, virginal coed following an ugly daylight encounter in a public park. Won Seo is the beautiful girl who slips and falls afoul and Jae-hyeon Jo is the violent, silent and seemingly remorseless flesh peddler who dogs her into total corruption. No punches are pulled in this hard-eyed examination of good and evil, love and hate and the all-important in-between. A feverish nightmare of movie that burns inside.

bad-guyBuy “Bad Guy” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Well, on the American side of the planet the Big Game (SuperBowl XLVIII in case you haven’t noticed) is around the corner and we’re already looking forward to this year’s crop of halftime commercials. So in keeping with the momentous event HP has decided to prime the pump with a look back as the Best of 2013’s Super Bowl Commercials in, Adzone IV”. Yes, it’s silly, schmaltzy and gratuitously over-produced commerce at its best/worst but it’s also all the things we love even if we are kinda lukewarm about most of the products. Check it for some harmless laughs. We like the Audi ad the best…and GO BRONCOS!
adzone-IV
  • TV Pick of the Week– We’ve mentioned it before but we gotta blow the horn one more time for Fox’s, Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, the red hot sitcom featuring the newest Golden Globe Winner Andy Samberg as high-energy goofball and ace detective of the title precinct. The great cast (and great deadpan work from Andre Braugher as their no-nonsense leader) is really starting to mesh and this anarchic yet endearing series is definitely finding its stride. Give it a shot for some righteous laughs.

brooklyn-nine-nineBuy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” on DVD from Amazon.

iTunes:

  • Alright…we know…it’s not quite the finale we wanted for this epic trilogy but…it’s the finale we deserve. 2012’s three-quel, The Dark Knight Rises, is here and you know you want it so don’t even try playing hard to get. Christian Bale is the title crimefighter who this time around runs into a bulked up Tom Hardy (unrecognizable and only somewhat coherent in a ridiculously frustrating mask) as Bane, a very Bad-Ass, heavy-duty terrorist come to take over Gotham City. Anne Hathaway slinks her way into the fray (and into a deliciously tight leather catsuit) to add some much needed estrogen with Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon Levitt as the other new arrivals on the Gotham scene. Like it, love it or otherwise (we’re in the latter category), just don’t try to make too much sense out of it as you mostly enjoy this top-notch effort from Writer/Director Christopher Nolan and fitting end to his reign as series savior. Thanks Chris!

The-Dark-Knight-RisesBuy “The Dark Knight Rises” on DVD from Amazon.

  • If you’re in need of some straight-up, Sci-fi/Action fun without too much plot or any extra thinking going on then check 2013’s sequel, Riddick, from Director David Twohy. This outcast-as-savior flick has gravelly growling Vin Diesel bringing his light-sensitive anti-hero back to life and features Karl Urban, Katee Sachkoff and Bokeem Woodbine as the other tough mercs on a doomed mission to a deadly planet. Action fans tune in for some good times and tasty popcorn fun.

riddickBuy “Riddick” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Now how about a crazy little thing called love (teenage variety)? If you’re ready to swoon then scope out 2013’s, The Spectacular Now, from Director James Ponsoldt. Miles Teller stars as a slick teen navigating his way smoothly through those oh-so-perilous years who runs across Shailene Woodly and unexpected…well…love. A surprisingly mature and adept look at that most romantic time based on the best seller by Tim Tharp. Not for Teens Only!

Old Man Winter is here to stay for a tick so let’s get those hibernating Apple TV’s fired up this weekend and heat up this chilly January with a little cinematic love. And here’s this week’s hottest Pix Picks to get you there.

NETFLIX:

  • This 2012 documentary has been getting a lot of ink worldwide and now it’s here on NF for your climate changing edification, More Than Honey”, from Director Markus Imhoof. An interesting science doc that examines the ominous reductions of honeybee populations around the globe and the possible environmental ripple effect of same. A harbinger of things to come? We just knew all those dystopian Sci-Fi flicks were onto something…

more-than-honeyBuy “More Than Honey” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Here’s a look at an upscale, literary, fractured family unit (not quite the All-American household) figuring it out in 2012’s, Stuck in Love”, from Director/Writer Josh Boone. Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Lily Collins, and Logan Lerman are the neurotic and highly competitive family with the perfectly ripe Kristen Bell popping in to add to the dysfunctional mix. Maybe not a bunch everyone can love but there’s a whole lotta gorgeous in that cast so you know that your viewing is gonna be pretty easy on the eyes!

stuck-in-loveBuy “Stuck in Love” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Ready for a tortuous dark ride into a very personal nightmare with a disturbingly relevant connection to real life? Check 2012’s, The Hunt, from Director Thomas Vinterberg. So-hot-he’s-cool Mads Mickelson plays a very low-key, ordinary citizen/teacher who gets almost arbitrarily squeezed into a horrible dark corner (just as he’s trying to dig his way out of a divorce) and then things deteriorate from there. A wrenching level of tension builds in this nasty car wreck of a drama. Tense and unrelenting until the very end. Very mature subject matter that is strictly for Adults Only.

the-huntBuy “The Hunt” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Now isn’t it time for a classic laugher from one of Hollywood’s last real rebels, Writer/Director Billy Wilder? Well, this week NF offers up 1959’s, Some Like It Hot”, for your viewing pleasure and this one truly is a pleasure on every level. Wilder (and his script) once again does his finest to subvert expectations, twist our psyches and rattle our funnybones as Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon (both flip-rolling with everything they’ve got) play two unfortunate NYC Jazz musicians who accidently witness a Mob execution (headed by an intimidating George Raft) then must hide out in Florida as incognito members of an All-Girl Jazz Band. Mad comic hijinks and romantic complications ensue when Curtis (further transforming from his “female” disguise into “rich playboy” disguise) falls for a curvalicious Marilyn Monroe, at her voluptuous best, as Lemmon (in “woman” mode) is simultaneously courted by millionaire eccentric Joe E. Brown. A raucous screwball screamer all the way and drinking is strongly encouraged before, during and after viewing. Cheers and remember- “Nobody’s perfect!”

some-like-it-hotBuy “Some Like It Hot” on DVD from Amazon.

HULU PLUS:

  • And the One and Only Original (let’s just ignore that 2011 mistake) is finally here to rock you, an absolute blast from the 1982 past, Conan the Barbarian”, from Director/Writer John Milius. Milius bangs all the gongs just right and Arnold is near perfect as the Barbarian-who-would-be-King.  James Earl Jones delivers the intensity as formidably frightening badman/madman Thulsa Doom and luscious Sandahl Bergman wins everyone’s hearts with an absolutely winning performance as the sexy, sultry and soulful warrior goddess of all of our collective dreams, Valeria. Just a rock solid, no-holds-barred, timeless take on the classic fantasy comic and a damn near perfect popcorn flick!

conan-the-barbarianBuy “Conan the Barbarian” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Fans of comedic rebel Andy Kaufman will no doubt appreciate the commitment of fellow comic actor Jim Carrey who passionately channels the late comedian in 1999’s, Man on the Moon”, a biopic from Academy Award winning Director Milos Forman. This personal film takes a hard look at the difficult career of a difficult performer who was always in his own zone right up until his untimely end. He did it his way.

man-on-the-moonBuy “Man on the Moon” on DVD from Amazon.

  • An overlooked satire for the new millennium, 2000’s American Psycho”, from Director Mary Harron stands up pretty well today as a twisted, darkly comic take on the consumer crazed greed and capitalist decadence of the American 80’s. Based on the Brett Easton Ellis bestseller, Christian Bale gives a tricky and absorbing performance as the soulless, Wall Street raider, social climber and cold-blooded killer (?) whose real passion lies as equally in murder as it does in his designer loot. A young, tender Reese Witherspoon whines effectively as his sterile, mannequin fiancée and Willem Dafoe is the cagey detective in warm pursuit as this sickly black comedy spirals into schizophrenia. Worth a look for the non-squeamish and not-easily-offended only.

american-psychoBuy “American Psycho” on DVD from Amazon.

iTunes:

  • One for the Whole Family– This week iTunes is offering Disney’s 1964’s classic musical for the Kids, Mary Poppins”. The inimitable, endearing and always enchanting Julie Andrews is the title Nanny of all our childhood dreams and Dick Van Dyke ably equals her energy as Bert the chimney sweep. Your kids will be singing the tunes for weeks to come and maybe even behaving themselves for just a little while after helplessly falling for fantasy Nanny Julie as she wrangles her way into their hearts.

Mary PoppinsBuy “Mary Poppins” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Ready to be chilled even deeper this January? Then check 2013’s, We Are What We Are”, from Director Jim Mickle. With Bill Sage as the head of an unusual country household bound by strict beliefs and tightly gripping a terrible secret, this chiller/thriller will creep up on you. A storm erupts as all the small town secrets threaten to float to the surface and his teenage daughters begin to question their past and their future. The mesmerizing Michael Parks brings life to the town sheriff who is torn by his own tragedy and moving sideways to slowly find the answers. A crafty tale of horror with a real bite in the end.

We Are What We Are (2013)Buy “We Are What We Are” on DVD from Amazon.

  • We’ve previously recommended the sequel and this week the 2000 Original is here, Red”, from Director Robert Schwentke.  Yes, we could give you the formula synopsis but all you really need to know about this one is the cast. Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman are a happily (and not so) retired gang of dangerous operators who are reformed to…well…you get the idea…so just enjoy the camaraderie, the wonderful Mary-Louise Parker and all the ‘splodey stuff.

redBuy “Red” on DVD from Amazon.

Baby, it’s cold outside (for some of us) and kicking it on the couch in front of the warm glow of our Apple TV never looked so sweet. So if you’re in the same icy January boat we’ve got this week’s hot Pix Picks to light that fire and keep it roaring through the weekend!

NETFLIX:

  • If you missed it at the theaters (and most did) or failed to snatch it off iTunes (as we suggested last year) then good news, Action aficionados, because 2012’s, Jack Reacher”, from Writer/Director Christopher McQuarrie has landed at Netflix this week ready to scratch your itch! Everybody’s favorite couch jumper, Tom Cruise, opens the series with an absolute topnotch entry into the genre as the title badass-on-a-mission. What you get here is zero frills but plenty of stripped down thrills and a refreshingly lean, mean script (co-written with series author Lee Childs) packed with memorable quips that you’ll be saving for later use. Cruise once again delivers a steely performance (yes, despite his comparatively diminutive stature to the book’s hero, Reacher purists) as the outlaw loner with his own code with Werner Herzog (yup, that Werner Herzog) effectively hamming it up as the Baddie behind the scenes and Jai Courtney scoring as his no nonsense torpedo. Robert Duvall rolls in to add his grumpy old gravitas and usual yeoman effort as a somewhat reluctant tagalong and there’s a Girl in it somewhere but we’ll be damned if we can remember who she was or what she did other than be the proper height when standing next to Tom. Rock solid shoot-em-up that hits all the targets!

jack-reacherBuy “Jack Reacher” on DVD from Amazon.

  • In the mood for some refined genius at the top of his game? Then check Director Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterpiece, Raging Bull”. Prepare to be astonished once again by the visceral power and riptide flow of Scorsese’s visuals and the propulsive, combustive force that is an in-his-prime Robert DeNiro as horribly, tragically flawed Middleweight contender and eventual Champion Jake LaMotta. Joe Pesci registers as more than DeNiro’s equal (and that is saying something) in the trickier role of the conflicted brother torn by loyalty yet scourged by his sibling’s rabid jealousy and Cathy Moriarty, in her film debut, simmers then burns as the sultry blonde trapped in Jake’s poisonous web of violence and insecurity. Beautiful to see, difficult to watch and impossible to look away from, this is Scorsese at his finest.

raging-bullBuy “Raging Bull” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Ease back on the emotional throttle and laugh it up big time with 1972’s classic comedy, Play It Again, Sam”, from Director Herbert Ross and Writer/Star Woody Allen. A pre-Mia Woody is young and fresh and full of the funny in this ticklish tale of divorced nebbish “Allan”, who neurotically pinballs through his reluctantly single life all the while falling in desperate love with his best friend’s wife, Diane Keaton. The best friend is an upwardly mobile Manhattanite, Tony Roberts, with an agenda of his own and passionate cineaste Allan’s fantasy hero, “Bogie”, shows up during times of emotional turmoil to guide the milquetoast Allan to the end of his romantic rainbow.

play-it-again-samBuy “Play It Again, Sam” on DVD from Amazon.

  • TV Pick of the Week– 2004’s travel documentary, Long Way Round”. BFF actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman challenge themselves to ride motorcycles from London to NYC going East-to-West (the titled direction) for this fascinating road trip. The charming duo of motorcycle enthusiasts get all the challenge they want and then some from start to finish in their daunting 20, 000+ mile test to find out what they’re made of as they just try their best to keep rolling along.  All 9 (44 minute) episodes are chock full of the best and worst of everything that a journey like this promises and the Boys never flinch from moving forward.  A great trip indeed.

long-way-roundBuy “Long Way Round” on DVD from Amazon.

HULU PLUS:

  • Feeling those winter blues? Then there’s some sweet company in 2003’s, Lost in Translation”, from Academy Award winning Writer and Director Sofia Coppola. Bill Murray is an aging, burnt-out movie star on full retreat as he picks up a few fat paychecks and sultry Scarlett Johansen is a young, neglected newlywed set adrift in a distinctly foreign culture and desperately looking for some connection to soothe her heart. A beautifully rendered 2 person dramady set against the kaleidoscope of constant motion, distraction and the endless neon that is modern Tokyo. A beguilingly resonant and affecting tale of generational communion and the tender mercies of unexpected relationships that save the soul.

'Lost in Translation' Movie StillsBuy “Lost in Translation” on DVD from Amazon.

  • Now let’s all shut up and laugh with 1987’s screwball classic, Spaceballs”, from Director/Writer Mel Brooks. A wildly irreverent and appropriately childish send-up of Star Wars (and whatever else Brooks can dream of), madman Mel throws it all at the screen and a whole lot of it sticks with a great cast of then young comedy Turks (John Candy, Rick Moranis, Dom Deluise and the voice of Joan Rivers) taking potshots at the Sci-fi bible. Make sure you bring the kids ‘cuz they’ll be laughing even harder than you will!

002_spaceballs_blu-rayBuy “Spaceballs” on DVD from Amazon.

  • And here’s a little bit of Old Time Rock-n-Roll! Check 2010’s documentary, American Grindhouse”, from Director Elijah Drenner. For all you Boomers and Gen-Xers out there who remember actually going to the movie theater as a kid on Saturday afternoon, this fun doc tracks the origins and heyday of the 70’s era B-Movie movement that gave so many of us all our cherished childhood cheap thrills and all that everlasting joy. Narrated by great B-Move fixture and comeback King Robert Forster and including a cast of now famed directors who were sitting in those matinee seats with the rest of us.

american-grindhouseBuy “American Grindhouse” on DVD from Amazon.

iTunes:

  • Ready for a romantic elegy for us older folks? Then slip into 2013’s, Enough Said, from Director Nicole Holofcener. An engaging, veteran cast (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Catherine Keener, Toni Collette and the late James Gandolfini) give brilliant warmth to this insightful and subtly delightful tale of second chance romance on the later-in-life treadmill. Thank you Mr. Gandolfini…for everything.

enough-saidBuy “Enough Said” on DVD from Amazon.

  • If you need an adrenalin injection then 2013’s, You’re Next, from Director Adam Wingard is just what the doctor ordered. A brilliantly spare and vicious tale of terror from Wingard (one of the “V/H/S” contributors) that will have you checking the locks on your doors before you go to bed even if you won’t be able to actually sleep. A ripped fresh, stripped bare and muscular take on the home invasion genre that will get your heart slamming in your chest and possibly have you rooting for the bad guys.

you-are-nextBuy “You’re Next” on DVD from Amazon.

  • One for the Kids– This sequel was a stateside box-office bust that sank under middling reviews but 2013’s, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”, from Director Thor Freudenthal might be an enjoyable ride for the tween crowd in your home or fans of the first effort, “The Lightning Thief”. Logan Lerman is Percy again with Alexandra Daddario returning as the love interest and reliable acting vets Stanley Tucci and Nathan Fillion adding palpable zing to their roles as contentious Gods in Percy’s path. Might be future cult classic…

percy-jackson-sea-of-monstersBuy “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” on DVD from Amazon.

That’s all for this week so crank up the heat and we’ll be right there!
