We would lie if we were to claim that the Apple TV is a perfect console, because that’s not true. While it does have its share of problems, no one can deny that it also has a lot of potential. The developers are working hard to improve it and bring it to current standards in terms of functionality and available content, but there are certain shortcomings about it that may tick off some people.

The App Store discovery doesn’t work as it should and give the fact that you cannot link applications on the web doesn’t help boost the ATV’s popularly either. However, in the past 2 weeks we went on a download spree and got to play a wide range of games on the ATV. If you’re an Apple TV gamer and want to know more about the best titles you should check out, then you’re in the right place. Below we’ll take a better look at the Best apple TV games that we think every Apple TV owners should play. Let’s check them out!

1. Galaxy on Fire: Manticore Rising

Galaxy on Fire Manticore Rising

Space shooters seem to be enjoying a lot of success on the Apple TV and Galaxy on Fire: Manticore Rising is certainly a title that deserves your attention. The game is fun to play, has great art and we believe that its shortcomings in the voiceover department can be overlooked. Why? Well, because the developers just gave us first look at how the Siri Remote may be used in the development of future Apple TV games.

In terms of control, it’s limited and your ship will automatically attack enemy ships. Using the motion controls is fun and exploring the vast space is an experience in itself given the great graphics. If you’re into space shooters and want to play a slick title that perfectly fits the genre, then you may want to give Manticore Rising a shot.

2. Oceanhorn

Oceanhorn level

Do you love The Legend of Zelda and think it’s an amazing game? Well, we also think the same. Even more, we want to let you know about Oceanhorn which is a sort of Zelda clone. What we love about this title, aside from its resemblance to Zelda, are the top notch graphics. These actually give you a glimpse of the ATV’s capability as a gaming console for less derivative games. Overall, the game is really fun to play, yet it’s not a masterpiece by any means. However, it does prove that titles such as it may be a convincing leap to a bigger screen.

3. Alto’s Adventure

Alto's Adventure main screen

If you have an iPad or an iPhone, chances are that you may have already played Alto’s Adventure. This is a very fun and interesting game to say the least. Not only that, but it features smooth animations, stark colors, amazing environments, and minimal artwork. All of these combined result in a world that captivates you and makes you want to play more. As you’ll zip down the slopes, all you have to do is jump. You can also hold the button to perform backflips, so playing the game is very simple. If you’re into very simple games that you can play either on the subway or at home while having a cup of tea, then Alto’s Adventure is a title you should certainly not miss.

4. Bean Dreams

Chilli bean

Bean Dreams is probably one of the funniest games we’ve ever played on the Apple TV. In the game you’ll play as a Mexican bean that simply can’t stop itself from jumping. This means that you just need to use your thumb to move the character right or left. When playing it on the Apple TV, you can either use a controller or the Siri Remote to enjoy it. Overall, Bean Dreams resembles Mario a lot and it’s a fresh take on the game that we think you’ll love. We’ve also had a lot more fun playing it with the Siri Remote rather than a third party controller, but your mileage may vary.

5. Skylanders: Superchargers

Skylanders Superchargers print

If you never thought that cramming a 10 GB game on a console is impossible, then you’re wrong. Skylanders Superchargers managed to do just that and you can now play it on the Apple TV. What makes this game special is the fact that it uses the app thinning technique on the tvOS to stream various parts of the game on the fly. Better yet, since it also features iCloud Saves, you can literally play this game anytime and anywhere as long as you’re connected to the internet.

If you want to play the game, you also have the option to purchase a 75-dollar starter pack, a vehicle, 2 figurines, and a controller. If you don’t want that, then rest assured. You can have just as much fun by opting for the in-app purchases. Have fun!

During the recent Apple event, CEO Tim Cook announced that Minecraft for Apple TV will soon become a reality. Read on for more information.

Minecraft is one of the most popular games available from Microsoft, and it’s available on almost all platforms. Consoles, mobile devices, desktops, laptops, weird devices, it’s available on everything. It is developed by Mojang and 4J Studios.

On iOS devices, you can download the Minecraft Pocket Edition and build your own world.

Tim Cook announced on stage that by the end of this year, along with many new apps, Minecraft for Apple TV will be released.

Minecraft Apple TV Edition

According to TechCrunch, Microsoft will be releasing a different version of the game for the Apple TV. Not the Pocket Edition that’s available for mobile devices. The base code would be the same, and it would be similar to the Pocket Edition, but there could be some new features as well.

Nothing more was revealed apart from the news that Minecraft will be available on the Apple TV.

By the end of this year, you’ll be able to sit on your couch and play Minecraft on your Apple TV. It’s a different feeling to play the game on a big screen.

You can even get a third-party controller for the best experience, as the Siri Remote or the Apple TV Remote app won’t be good enough.

Release Date

As we mentioned before, the Minecraft Apple TV edition will be available by the end of this year. We will update the article when we know more or have an actual release date.

The Apple TV version of Minecraft will probably be a paid app, and most likely support cross play across other iOS devices and Mac. You could start playing on your iPhone, and continue on the TV. We’re not really sure.

Stay tuned to find out more about Minecraft for Apple TV.

Riptide GP: Renegade is the latest in the Riptide series of games from game developer Vector Unit, and now you can play it on the Apple TV 4th gen.

The game will be released for the Apple TV on August 2nd. It has been under development from quite some time now. If you’re a fan of the water racing game, then you will be glad to know that you can now play the game on the TV, console, mobile and on the PC.

Renegade has console level graphics and gameplay, which means that the game will be fun to play on the Apple TV. It has been developed with consoles in mind, and features dynamic water physics, realistic water-splash effects, and more.

The game is simple and takes place in the future, where hydro jet racing is quite popular. You will have to perform stunts, escape the police drones, boats and other obstacles.

A career mode is also available within the game that lets you hone your skills and fight bosses to get to the top of the league. You can upgrade and customize your hydro jet, unlock stunts, improve your riders skills, and a lot more.

Riptide GP Renegade for Apple TV also has split screen multiplayer mode, where in you can compete with online players or your friends. There are plenty of hydro jets to choose from and customize. You can modify them to transform when you’re on the move.

The game runs at a max resolution of 1080p and is locked at 60 FPS, which is good for gaming on the TV. Most console games also run at the same resolution. Watch the gameplay trailer below;

You will be able to download Riptide GP: Renegade for Apple TV on August 2nd. The game is available in the following languages; English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese.

TellyMount is a smartphone holder that positions your smartphone above your TV. It allows you to use your smartphone to make video calls or play motion based games right on your TV. The developers has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring TellyMount into production. You can get it at 50% off MSRP at an early-bird price of $25.

Traditionally, video calling on TV is accomplished through either a TV’s built-in camera or through a expensive external TV camera. However, users can also video call on TV by taking advantage of the camera in the smartphones they already own. This can be done by launching a video calling app on a phone (such as FaceTime, Skype, or Hangouts) and then mirroring the phone to a TV through Apple TV or Chromecast (or another mirroring method, such as MHL or Apple Digital AV). The video calling session on the phone can then be enjoyed on the big-screen.

tm04

Beyond video calling, users can play full-body motion games on TV by mirroring those games from their smartphone to their TV. Kinect-style games that utilize a phone’s built-in camera are available for both iPhone and Android phones. TellyMount conveniently holds the phone during gameplay and allows users to quickly adjust the camera angle to account for a user’s height and distance from the TV.

tm03

TellyMount is designed to fit virtually any TV and has an expandable phone clamp to hold virtually any smartphone, even with a case.

tvOS, the new operating system for the Apple TV, opens up opportunities to bring great games to the living room. Unity, the maker of a development platform for creating 3D and 2D games, has recently announced that they are already working to bring Unity runtime and all the games made with Unity to the new Apple’s platform.

Actually, Hipster Whale’s Crossy Road, one of the very first games for Apple TV 4 that was demoed during the announcement of the new Apple TV in September is using the Unity technology.

CrossyRoad-AppleTV

Unity is currently working with a closed focus group to iterate, improve and polish Apple TV support.

When we feel it is ready, we will open it up for public beta testing. We don’t have any dates to share yet; although we expect this to happen later this fall.

This is how Unity describes the differences between tvOS and iOS:

While tvOS is built on iOS heritage, it went under heavy cleanup process: numerous of frameworks are absent on tvOS and some new requirements are in place. TV in general is quite different in terms of how content is presented, consumed and interacted, which makes it more accurate to treat it as a separate platform rather than extension of the iOS platform.

Developers can already start preparing their game content for tvOS. According to Unity, the iOS developers can get pretty close to the tvOS experience by connecting an iPhone6+ to an external TV via HDMI cable and pairing it with a wireless MFi certified Game Controller.

The company has also published a quick checklist of what an iOS game should pass to be ready for tvOS:

  • Make sure your game runs fine on the latest Unity 5.x version. Apple TV support will be based on the latest Unity 5 version available at release time.
  • You should be able to control your game with just the Apple TV remote alone. However, we think the best way to prepare in its absence is to make it work with Game Controllers first. Make sure all of your in-game UI responds to Game Controller inputs. It should be playable without ever touching the screen. Later, you can easily improve on that by using the new remote touch gestures and gyroscope or accelerometer input.
  • Apple TV devices will have virtually no persistent store for your games, so moving your game saves to Cloud becomes a necessity.
  • Apple TV is a streamed content device and your games are expected to be streamed if they take more than 200 MB of disk space. Here comes On Demand Resource support to the rescue. You can learn more about it in our forum post.
  • Most of the plugins will need to be recompiled specifically for this new platform, some of their functionality might even be unavailable on this platform. Please review all the plugins you are using inside your game and contact their providers for Apple TV support.

The new Apple TV will be available at the end of October/in early November the first  starting at $149 for a 32GB model and $199 for a 64GB model.
