We would lie if we were to claim that the Apple TV is a perfect console, because that’s not true. While it does have its share of problems, no one can deny that it also has a lot of potential. The developers are working hard to improve it and bring it to current standards in terms of functionality and available content, but there are certain shortcomings about it that may tick off some people.

The App Store discovery doesn’t work as it should and give the fact that you cannot link applications on the web doesn’t help boost the ATV’s popularly either. However, in the past 2 weeks we went on a download spree and got to play a wide range of games on the ATV. If you’re an Apple TV gamer and want to know more about the best titles you should check out, then you’re in the right place. Below we’ll take a better look at the Best apple TV games that we think every Apple TV owners should play. Let’s check them out!

1. Galaxy on Fire: Manticore Rising

Galaxy on Fire Manticore Rising

Space shooters seem to be enjoying a lot of success on the Apple TV and Galaxy on Fire: Manticore Rising is certainly a title that deserves your attention. The game is fun to play, has great art and we believe that its shortcomings in the voiceover department can be overlooked. Why? Well, because the developers just gave us first look at how the Siri Remote may be used in the development of future Apple TV games.

In terms of control, it’s limited and your ship will automatically attack enemy ships. Using the motion controls is fun and exploring the vast space is an experience in itself given the great graphics. If you’re into space shooters and want to play a slick title that perfectly fits the genre, then you may want to give Manticore Rising a shot.

2. Oceanhorn

Oceanhorn level

Do you love The Legend of Zelda and think it’s an amazing game? Well, we also think the same. Even more, we want to let you know about Oceanhorn which is a sort of Zelda clone. What we love about this title, aside from its resemblance to Zelda, are the top notch graphics. These actually give you a glimpse of the ATV’s capability as a gaming console for less derivative games. Overall, the game is really fun to play, yet it’s not a masterpiece by any means. However, it does prove that titles such as it may be a convincing leap to a bigger screen.

3. Alto’s Adventure

Alto's Adventure main screen

If you have an iPad or an iPhone, chances are that you may have already played Alto’s Adventure. This is a very fun and interesting game to say the least. Not only that, but it features smooth animations, stark colors, amazing environments, and minimal artwork. All of these combined result in a world that captivates you and makes you want to play more. As you’ll zip down the slopes, all you have to do is jump. You can also hold the button to perform backflips, so playing the game is very simple. If you’re into very simple games that you can play either on the subway or at home while having a cup of tea, then Alto’s Adventure is a title you should certainly not miss.

4. Bean Dreams

Chilli bean

Bean Dreams is probably one of the funniest games we’ve ever played on the Apple TV. In the game you’ll play as a Mexican bean that simply can’t stop itself from jumping. This means that you just need to use your thumb to move the character right or left. When playing it on the Apple TV, you can either use a controller or the Siri Remote to enjoy it. Overall, Bean Dreams resembles Mario a lot and it’s a fresh take on the game that we think you’ll love. We’ve also had a lot more fun playing it with the Siri Remote rather than a third party controller, but your mileage may vary.

5. Skylanders: Superchargers

Skylanders Superchargers print

If you never thought that cramming a 10 GB game on a console is impossible, then you’re wrong. Skylanders Superchargers managed to do just that and you can now play it on the Apple TV. What makes this game special is the fact that it uses the app thinning technique on the tvOS to stream various parts of the game on the fly. Better yet, since it also features iCloud Saves, you can literally play this game anytime and anywhere as long as you’re connected to the internet.

If you want to play the game, you also have the option to purchase a 75-dollar starter pack, a vehicle, 2 figurines, and a controller. If you don’t want that, then rest assured. You can have just as much fun by opting for the in-app purchases. Have fun!

Activision, one of the world’s largest gaming company, announced in a blog post that it will be bringing three new games – Guitar Hero Live, Skylanders SuperChargers, and Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved – to the 4th generation Apple TV this fall.

Guitar Hero Live

The new Guitar Hero Live for Apple TV will feature a new live mode that is said to bring you “closer to the live stage experience” with live-action, first-person gameplay with crowds and bands that react dynamically to how you play.

The game will be also available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch and it will come with the redesigned six-button guitar controller, which connects through Bluetooth so it be used across all supported Apple devices.

There will be also Guitar Here TV, “the world’s first playable music video network,” which will let you play along with a continually updated collection of official music videos.

Skylanders SuperChargers

skylanders

Skylanders SuperChargers is the next entry in the Skylanders series, an action-adventure fantasy video game. It utilizes a NFC reader platform, called the Traptanium Portal, that reads NFC chips located on the bottom of figurines. The figurines are then used in-game as playable characters.

The Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Pack for Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch will include a Bluetooth-enabled portal, an embedded Bluetooth controller, and a built-in stand. If you have multiple Apple devices, your progress can be synced across Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch with cloud save support under the same Game Center account.

Skylanders

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved is a fast-paced arcade-style shooter game that features 3D action and gameplay modes, a dedicated single-player campaign and an online cooperative mode. It will be available for the new Apple TV, as well as for the iPad Pro. Activison says it will be “a lot of fun to play with the new remote for Apple TV and the new Apple Pencil on iPad Pro.”

Apple TV 4 will be available at the end of October starting at $149 for a 32GB model and $199 for a 64GB model.

Bowling Central is one of those few games on the App Store which makes best use of Apple TV’s dual screen mirroring feature. AirPlay the game and your TV screen becomes the bowling lane while your iPhone tracks your movements to deliver the perfect spin (like the Nintendo Wii).

Rolocule Games has recently pushed out the major 2.0 update to Bowling Central, which pushes further what was probably the most realistic Bowling experience on iOS and Apple TV. The update adds 45 new challenging levels and for the first time, drops the price tag to zero!

More importantly for Apple TV users, the update brings local multiplayer mode, which makes Bowling Central a perfect party game. Up to four friends can hook up their iOS devices to the Apple TV and broadcast them to the television. Now take turns and compete against each other just like with the original game.

Along with the update, Rolocule made an exciting announcement: the game will receive Apple Watch support as soon as watchOS 2 firmware gets dropped to the public. Meaning you won’t even need to hold an iPhone to play the game. As long as you have your Apple Watch on the wrist, they can track its accelerometer to create the same magic as before, delivering the most authentic gameplay experience ever.

The announcement is very significant as we are now sure that we will be seeing more games and apps making use of the Apple Watch – Apple TV combo. Read on what Apple Watch means for Apple TV users.

Get Bowling Central for free from the App Store.

Party Doodles for iPad and Apple TV

Gamers rejoice! Cerebral Gardens, a software development studio specializing in iOS and Mac apps, is launching the “first game for Apple TV” through the App Store. It’s called Party Doodles, and it’s a multiplayer, interactive party drawing and guessing game game you’ll certainly be busting out at your next gathering. Dave Wood, the founder and president of Cerebral Gardens, calls Party Doodles the first game ever designed specifically for the Apple TV, and it’s certainly about time. And when integrated with AirPlay, it really represents the next generation of gaming.

Party Doodles seamlessly integrates the Apple TV with the iPad, a perfect fit that fans of party games should love. Which means Cerebral Gardens will love checking their bottom line next month, as more than four million Apple TVs were purchased in 2011. Sure, that’s still a small segment of all the millions upon millions of gamers out there, but there’s certainly something to be said for being the first kid on the block. Party Doodles in pioneering a new market, and eager fans will probably reward their work.

Cerebral Gardens first thought of the game last summer, when Apple launched their mirroring technology, giving users the ability to link their iPad directly to their Apple TV wirelessly through the AirPlay. Party Doodles is a drawing game designed for multiple users, so it really takes advantage of that cutting edge technology.

So what will Party Doodle fans find outside of integration with their Apple TV? Well, the game comes stock with hours of free content, more than enough to make your next get together a hit. And since the game is app-based, users can always buy additional gameplay if they run out of free time. Party Doodle also integrates with social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and fully supports the new iPad’s retina display.

Head over to What’s on iPhone to read the full review of Party Doodles for iPad, and then make your way over to your friendly neighborhood App Store to pick up your copy today.

Dual-screen apps for Apple TV

“The mythical Apple television set that everyone talks about is already here,” said Jeremy Allaire, CEO of Brightcove, in an interview with The Verge. Brightcove, a provider of cloud content services, has just unveiled the App Cloud Dual-Screen Solution for Apple TV. The new solution enables media publishers to develop apps for the iPhone and iPad that simultaneously control content, data and information presented on an HDTV while displaying synchronized content on the iPad or iPhone.

The dual-screen solution leverages Apple’s AirPlay technology, which allows viewers to use applications that simultaneously present content, interactive options and data on both the touch device and an Apple TV.

Brightcove’s new Dual-Screen App Solution will be included in the new App Cloud SDK and available to the open source community, enabling content owners to build dual-screen apps for Apple TV.

The availability of the dual-screen solution coincides with Brightcove’s introduction of App Cloud Core, a free developer edition, also announced today. App Cloud Core enables developers to build an unlimited number of mobile applications using HTML5 and JavaScript.

Although dual-screen apps for iOS and Apple TV (AirPlay-enabled apps) already exist, thanks to an open source SDK, it will be now easier to create such apps for Apple TV.
