Last year, Amazon appeared to have confirmed that they were developing a tvOS app for Prime Video, but the second-largest streaming service in the United States is still missing from the Apple TV. Speaking at Vox Media’s Code Conference yesterday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said the company wants “acceptable business terms” before it can bring Prime Video to platforms like Apple TV.

We can always get the player on the device, the question is whether you can get it on with acceptable business terms.

When asked whether “acceptable business terms” meant paying Apple’s famous 30 percent cut on in-app purchases and subscriptions, Bezos declined to answer and said that “private business discussions should stay private.”

Last October Amazon pulled both Apple TV and Chromecast from its retail store citing potential customer confusion over which streaming devices support Amazon Prime Video.

It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion.

Now, it seems that Amazon can bring its video service to the Apple TV and return the set-top box to its store only after Apple offers “acceptable business terms”, which would probably mean agreeing to take less than 30% cut of anything sold within Amazon Prime Video app on Apple TV.

Apple TV users have hoped for a standalone Amazon Videos app for their little black boxes for the past few years. Although there is a way to enjoy Amazon Videos on the big screen using Apple TV, it’s not the most straightforward and comfortable one. Back in November, Amazon appeared to have confirmed that they were developing a tvOS app for Prime Video, but since then we haven’t heard anything about it.

And according to Cord Cutters News editor Luke Bouma, “all signs continue to point to the fact that Amazon Video is not coming to the new Apple TV.”

He believes that the most recent evidence (which is “just one more piece in a growing list of evidence”) comes from the new Starz standalone subscription streaming app for Apple TV and Android.

Why does this new service mean anything for Amazon Video?

Starz has had a subscription service for some time now through the Amazon Video app as an add-on. Roku, Fire TV, and other device users have had access to Starz content.

The Starz app being added to the Apple TV and not to Roku, Fire TV, and other devices points to Starz knowing there is no hope for the future of Apple TV and Amazon Video. Android also does not have a official Amazon Video app in the Google Play Store. So the two platforms the new Starz subscription service works on are two largest platforms that do not have an Amazon Video app.

Making a high end app, such as the new Starz app, is not cheap. If Starz thought Amazon was on its way over to the Apple TV or Google Play store they would not be spending their money on their own service.

So what is the reason Amazon is not coming to the Apple TV?

Likely because Amazon Video is at its core a store, and Apple seems to have a policy that no third-party stores for movies and TV shows being added to the Apple TV. Now Amazon has a similar policy on their Fire TV so Apple is not alone in this policy.

From everything we have learned, this is the real issue that is preventing the Amazon Video app from coming to the Apple TV. Amazon also seems unwilling to release an app that does not have their Amazon store, and Apple won’t allow third-party content stores leaving services, such as Starz, in the middle.

Luke thinks that Amazon Video could eventually show up on the Apple TV but he is quite sure it’s not going to happen any time soon.

The 4th gen. Apple TV went on sale on Monday but it’s currently available only via Apple’s online store. Now, 9to5Mac learned that the new device will be available for purchase in Apple’s retail stores starting this Friday, Oct. 30.

Apple retail employees say that stores are beginning to receive shipments to sell at the end of this week, while stores will be re-organized overnight on Thursday to promote the new Apple TV in stores on Friday.

Other retailers, like Best Buy, B&H and MacMall, are also planning to begin selling the Apple TV 4 this Friday. The new Apple’s set-top box won’t be available on Amazon.

The Seattle-based Web retailer sent an e-mail to its marketplace sellers that it will stop selling the Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast since those devices don’t “interact well” with Prime Video.

No new listings for the products will be allowed and posting of existing inventory will be removed Oct. 29, Amazon said.

As noted by Wired, “in doing so, it will absent the second and fourth best-selling streaming boxes from its digital shelves.”

The move comes not long after Apple announced the 4th gen. Apple TV and just days after Google revealed the new version of Chromcast device.

Amazon spokesperson provided the following statement:

Over the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime. It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion.

This will most likely mean that we will not see the official Amazon Prime Video app on the Apple TV 4.

Even though, if the Apple TV (2nd, 3rd or 4th gen.) is your only streaming device, you can still watch Prime Video on the big screen by using AirPlay or HDMI cable. Check out how.

The new Apple TV will be available at the end of October starting at $149 for a 32GB model and $199 for a 64GB model.
