Here is Daring Fireball’s John Gruber’s take on yesterday’s speculations on whether Apple is working on a standalone TV set or not:

Carl Icahn in his open letter to Tim Cook:

Apple Television Set – after many years of rumors as part of Apple’s push into television and as we referenced previously, we expect in FY 2016 Apple will sell 55” and 65” ultra high definition television sets.

In addition to an Ultra High Definition television set, we expect Apple to launch a related suite of tiered products and services, including a “skinny bundle” of pay-tv channels (partnered with various media companies) and an updated Apple TV microconsole.

Daisuke Wakabayashi for WSJ:

Investor Carl Icahn said he expects Apple Inc. to introduce an ultra-high-definition television in 2016. But after nearly a decade of research, Apple quietly shelved plans to make such a set more than a year ago, according to people familiar with the matter.

John Gruber on his blog:

One way to read it is that Apple gave Wakabayashi this scoop in order to throw cold water on Icahn’s speculation — they’re not doing a TV set and they want everyone know it, so that when they announce a new Apple TV box at WWDC next month (I know nothing about that other than that it’s widely rumored) everyone will understand that there is no TV set coming next year to wait for.

Making boxes that connect to TVs — like Apple TV as it stands today — that makes sense to me. Making actual TV sets, though, I’ve long been skeptical about. Years ago, I thought, “Why should Apple settle for selling a $100 box connected to a $2000 TV instead of just selling the $2000 TV set with the box built in?” The problem, though, is that TV set prices have dropped dramatically, and people don’t replace their TV sets that frequently. The only way to build a large TV-based platform is to make boxes that connect to the TV sets people already own. There has to be a standalone Apple TV box. In theory, Apple could make an actual TV set, too, but I’m unconvinced that makes strategic sense.

As Apple TV users, we are always excited to hear rumours on Apple’s own television set. The latest one is the open letter which Carl Icahn sent today to Apple, where he predicts the company to release an Ultra HDTV next year. However, The Wall Street Journal confirmed hours later that Apple has no plans to enter the television market anytime soon.

WSJ says that Apple had been working on a television set for nearly a decade. The HDTV market was very competitive and hence, they were looking for a real “breakthrough” feature that would set them apart and convince users to switch. And as it seems, they never found any.

They tried adding a front camera to the television helping with FaceTime and video calling. They also experimented with different types of displays, but none were compelling enough.

As such, Apple dropped its TV project a year ago. They didn’t dissolve the team working on it but just reallotted them to work on other devices, probably the Apple TV 4. Apple plans to reform the team and continue its television plans as soon as the company comes up with that breakthrough feature.

So for the time being, Apple is focused solely on its next set-top box for media consumption, which is expected to be announced next month at WWDC 2015.

Apple TV users often find themselves switching between the Apple TV remote and the televion remote. Changing the volume and source on the television requires the TV remote while the normal navigation of content of course requires the silver Apple TV remote. For media buffs, this turns out to be much annoying and we have always longed for a solution. Sideclick aims to be one.

Sideclick is a new Kickstarter campaign which aims to streamline the process of cord-cutting by unifying the controller. It is a simple attachment to your Apple TV Remote which carries a few buttons of its own. You can pair it with the television or speaker system or any device in your house, as long as it uses infrared technology.

Sideclick is a universal remote attachment that snaps onto your streaming remote, allowing you to control the basic functions of your TV: Power, Volume Up and Down, Channel Up and Down, and Source/Input.
Sideclick eliminates the need to always be looking for “that other remote” and allows you to control your TV and your streaming device all-in-one.

Remember the AirBrowser app? We reported its launch earlier this year and, in our hands on look, concluded it as “a good option to look into” for anyone who wants to browse the internet on the HDTV via Apple TV. It’s been a few months since the release and a bunch of updates claim to have manifolded the AirBrowser experience. And today, we’ll see if that claim holds up in our tests.

Spoiler alert: it does!

Air Browser gives you a full desktop internet browser experience, but without a PC. All you need is an iOS device and an Apple TV (or a supported HDMI Cable).

You will be able to surf the web, to watch streaming videos in full screen on your TV, to read newspapers and anything else you normally do with a standard PC or a Mac browser. Pinch to zoom, swipe gesture to navigate through the navigation history, an easy to use multi tab system, bookmarks and more.

Getting Connected with AirBrowser

IMG_6125

To be honest, I have never had any difficulties in connecting any AirPlay apps to Apple TV, and AirBrowser is no exception. Even if you’re using AirPlay for the first time, there is an animated step-by-step guide which loads on start up and guides you through this (swipe up the Control Centre, tap AirPlay, select Apple TV and turn on Mirroring). Google loads up immediately on your Apple TV, while the iPhone or iPad is turned into a touchpad.

Browsing on Apple TV with AirBrowser

IMG_4617.JPG

Not sure if it’s because we’ve been serially downgrading our screen sizes from the 22-inch desktop monitors to 4-inch mobile screen, but thinking of browsing on an HDTV kind of scares us or at least seems like an overdo. But from my experience, after an awkward ten minutes or so, you just start enjoying the full screen browsing and you find it hard to go back. Apple.com has never looked more beautiful and watching 1080p YouTube videos on the 50 inch screen is mesmerizing.

Since you’re seated on your couch much away from the television screen, things just feel normal and clearer, rather than overblown. AirBrowser really adds to the experience by its intuitive controls and if you’re a Mac user, you’ll instantly fall into the slot. Use single finger for moving the cursor, two for scrolling, pinch gestures for zooming and taps to open links. The best thing, whenever you tap on a text field, a virtual keyboard pops up on your iPhone/iPad and you can type on it just like with a physical wireless keyboard.

In our tests, the websites loaded quickly and the cursor movements didn’t show any noticeable lag. The navigation is similar to Macs not only in terms of the gestures, but the capacitive touch screen of your iOS device works so fluidly, that its feel is comparable to the touch pads on MacBooks.

AirBrowser’s custom features

IMG_6147.JPG

Besides the central mirroring ability, AirBrowser comes packed with a wide range of options which makes it as powerful as most browsers for iPhone.

Note: The first thing you need to do after setting up the app is go into the Settings tab and toggle the Size pages to fit’mode on. Else some websites will load ‘boxed’ instead of full screen and spoils the whole fun.

AirBrowser supports multitabs, meaning you can have many tabs open at the same time. Switching between tabs is as easy as a ‘tap and swipe’.

There is a separate Bookmarks and History manager for the app. Also you can access the recently opened pages via the Grid icon in the app. This will show up as a tab on the TV screen and can be selected directly over there, instead of you looking down into your device every time.

IMG_4616.JPG

On the iPad/iPhone screen, you do have the options to load the desktop or mobile versions but I highly recommend keeping it to the former. Also, the webpages can easily be shared from here via AirDrop, Message, Mail and more.

Compatibility

AirBrowser is compatible with iPhone 4S and up, iPad 2 and up, and iPod Touch 5th gen. It can stream to Apple TV 2nd gen and Apple TV 3rd gen. If you have doubts as to how well your devices will work with the app, Airbrowser has a dedicated checker app for the same. You can get it here for free.

Verdict

I have used a couple of other AirPlay browsers as well as some normal iOS browsers over AirPlay. But, unlike others, AirBrowser seems to concentrate on just this one thing, to the point that there is no standalone browsing. And such a focus surely shows through in its execution, as AirBrowser is noticeably faster, powerful and more intuitive now, than what I saw back in July.

In short, AirBrowser is the most premium experience I’ve ever had with any AirPlay browsers. If your job involves showing off websites or articles or web pages over AirAplay, the 1080p output of AirBrowser is something you shouldn’t miss. Even for normal home users who’re holding out just because you think HDTV browsing is awkward, should try AirBrowser to realize it isn’t.

Popular activist investor Carl Icahn recently published an open letter to Tim Cook, asking for an increased share buyback from the company. And among other products mentioned in the letter, he points to an earlier discussion regarding the possibility of Apple releasing its own television set in 2016.

Apple has long time ago stated that they weren’t interested in a HDTV lineup since their upgrade cycles are pretty long. But Icahn says that the ultraHD TV will replace the normal HDTV by 2016, and this upgrade cycle would be a huge opportunity for Apple to step into the television business.

[..]we believe UltraHD’s (ultra-high-definition television) superior picture quality in comparison to regular HD will drive a major TV replacement cycle as the price gap between them narrows.

It should also be noted that Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, has referenced UltraHD as a major catalyst for Netflix going forward, and while this is true for Netflix, we believe it is also true for Apple.

Against the backdrop of this replacement cycle, FY 2016 represents an opportune time to introduce an UltraHD TV set.

Icahn forecasts that the Apple TV set would be sized between 55 and 65 inches, and be priced around $1500 (remember this Best Buy survey from 2012?). He even predicts that the TV set will sell about 12 million units in 2016 and more than double that in 2017.

He also tries to persuade Cook into the idea by citing the huge success of iTunes Store and how users would be able to enjoy UltraHD movies from iTunes through such high resolution screens.

We have been hearing rumors about the Apple standalone TV set for more than four years now, and earlier this year we received some contrasting reports on its development status. You can read all about the Apple’s HDTV here.

It is also worth remembering that rumors of an UltraHD TV from Apple filled the news in early 2013.

Apple Watch AirPlay and Apple TV

Though Apple spend a huge chunk of yesterday’s keynote discussing the Apple Watch, there are still a lot of things which remain unclear. There is no news on the battery life nor on how the fingerprint-level security will be achieved to watch-mediated Apple Pay purchases.

And when you leave iPhone at home to go for a jog, listen to music directly on Apple Watch.

This statement from the Apple Watch subsite confirms that there will be dedicated internal storage for the wearable; but how much, is still a mystery.

And then, there is the AirPlay icon for Music depicted in the promo video (screenshot above) and Tim Cook’s words “I use mine to control the Apple TV”, which clearly shows that the Apple Watch and Apple TV are designed to work together.

So what does the Apple Watch really have in store for Apple TV users and what could be the best possibilities?

If the Apple Watch is capable of AirPlaying music, the next thing in the list is to slide-show photos to the HDTV. Your Apple Watch already has a bunch of your favorite photos on board and it is most likely that it can AirPlay them too.

Also, Tim did spent some time to brag about the Apple Watch’s S1 processor , which he claims to be like a desktop processor of its own. What if your Apple Watch can mirror any of its apps to the Apple TV? Imagine a 1080p animated weather info, or a giant alarm clock or a huge calendar or even some Digital Crown mediated games?

Well if that was the case, Apple could have done this much before with the iPhone, right? Wrong. This is 2014 and we now have continuity, indoor positioning and home kit. If continuity features work out as well as Apple says it would, your watch would be the perfect device to track your location inside the house. Imagine you entering your living room and the Apple TV suddenly shows the Weather, your notifications, to-dos and a daily events overview? Cool, I know.

Coming to a much more likely scenario, the Apple Watch can mirror its Activity and Workout apps to the Apple TV. You are exercising on a treadmill and you have your TV in the front. As soon as you start running, the Apple Watch detects it and senses that an Apple TV is in the room. Your television automatically turns into a workout meter hub, showing your current speed, calories burnt, distance ran, heart rate and more.

Also, Apple says their Watch will be available in early 2015, which is the same time slot where our rumors place the Apple TV 4 launch. Is this just a coincidence or does Apple TV and Apple Watch have a lot to share?

Apple Watch Apple TV Remote

The Apple ecosystem is behaving together more seamless than ever before and the possibilities are infinite. Though the new iPhones are not as pleasing as some had expected, it is clear that Apple is building something bigger than all of this.

Apple is going somewhere its competitors can’t follow. Lets wait and watch.

Holiday Gift Guide 2015: Best Accessories for Apple TV

XBMC is probably the most popular and versatile media managing hub out there, thanks to its supports for a variety of content, provision for third party addons and compatibility with almost all operating systems.

However, Apple doesn’t seem to think so, as there are no XBMC apps for iPhone or iPad nor any XBMC support on Apple TV, may be due to the misuse for piracy. But it seems unfair that the rest non-pirate good fellas have to suffer too.

And although there is a way to get XBMC working on the original Apple TV, as well as on jailbroken Apple TV 2 (see more details at the end of this post), there are still millions of Apple TV 3 (and non-jailbreakable Apple TV 2*) owners left without the ability to get XBMC on their little, black boxes.

best-gifts-apple-tv

But while we can in no way add XBMC directly to the Apple TV 3, there sure is a way to enjoy XBMC content on the HDTV using a 3rd gen. Apple TV. Here’s how.

XBMC on Apple TV 3

If you do have an Apple TV 3 and want to watch XBMC on your big screen, the best shot would be to make use of the AirPlay Mirroring feature of iOS devices and Macs and even Android and PCs with just the right apps and software. These methods can be used for older generation Apple TVs too. So read on.

1. Using iPhone or iPad

This method works only if you have a jailbroken iOS device. Find out more about jailbreaking your iDevice.

  • Installing XBMC on jailbroken iDevice:

Step 1 – Open Cydia > Sources > Edit > Tap the plus button on left top > add this source and confirm
https://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/ios/

IMG_1988
Step 2 – Once the source is added, you can either search for XBMC or find it within the source. Tap on Install and Confirm.

Now your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is running the complete XBMC suite. Just enable AirPlay Mirroring from the pull up menu and your HDTV will start the show.

You’ll notice that the app screen and media are showing boxed-in or with black pillars on its sides. Fear not! Within the app, just go into Settings > System > Video > Display mode and change it to FullScreen #2

XBMC will automatically detect that you’re on an Apple TV and turn the device’s screen into a gesture based remote and you can enjoy your movies in full screen on the HDTV.

2. Using a Mac

Download and install XBMC on your Mac from the official site.

Just enable OS X native AirPlay Mirroring to the Apple TV 3 and it’s done.

However, if you want to multitask simultaneously, like edit a document or surf the internet or watch another movie while your wife watches the XBMC media, you can get other mirroring apps like AirParrot, which helps to broadcast specific single apps. You can just hide the XBMC windows on the Mac and start using Safari or Keynote, without them showing up on the television.

3. Using a Windows computer

In this case we will use AirParrot, the only software out there that enables screen mirroring on Windows.

Step 1 – Get AirParrot for Windows
Step 2 – Download and install XBMC for Windows from here

Step 3 – Right click on the AirParrot icon in the bottom right toolbar and select your Apple TV.

Done! Your Windows computer’s screen is is now being streamed to your Apple TV. Open XBMC on the PC and start watching movies on the big screen.

4. Using Android phones or tablets

Koushik Dutta‘s Mirror app (currently in beta) can now mirror your Android screen to an Apple TV.

To try Mirror beta, you need to do the following:

1) Root your Android 4.4.2 phone (“not necessary in the future”)
2) Join the ClockworkMod community
3) Join the beta
4) Download the app from Google Play

Now, install XBMC on your Android device from XBMC downloads page. Fire it up and AirPlay to your Apple TV.

Sounds simple enough, but, since we haven’t tried this method ourselves yet (as this wasn’t possible until recently), we’d love to hear back from you guys on the results.

So these are the methods by which you can get XBMC to show up on your HDTV using the Apple TV 3 or non-jailbreakable Apple TV 2. Please try them out and let us know which one works the best for you.

XBMC on Apple TV 1st Generation

The process is a bit complicated for Apple TV 1 users. In this case, you’ll be using a software called OpenElec and you won’t be able to install XBMC as a separate channel on your set-top box but instead you’ll need to install XBMC as a stand-alone operating system on it. In short, your old Apple TV will boot directly into the XBMC home screen.

Find our detailed tutorial here.

The latest beta of OpenElec supports XBMC 13.0 Gotham.

XBMC on Apple TV 2nd Generation (jailbreakable)

Apple TV 2 has a stable and popular jailbreak solution, which will easily enable you to install XBMC directly on the Apple TV. Seas0nPass JB for Apple TV 2 is very well accepted by users and it is evident with the too high asking price for used Apple TV 2 on eBay. So if you’re not already jailbroken, it is highly recommended that you do it by following our tutorial.

Once you’re jailbroken, you can follow this guide to install XBMC.

* Latest jailbreakable Apple TV software version is 5.3.

Finally, here is a worthy opponent for the Apple TV, the Fire TV from Amazon and quite evidently, games and Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming are a plus for the latter, right?

Well, let’s wait a bit till Apple announces their next-gen. Apple TV so that we can make a fair Apple TV 4 vs Amazon Fire TV comparison. In the meantime, if you’re craving to get your Amazon Prime Instant Video subscription or rented movies on your Apple TV, here is a way.

Amazon Prime on Apple TV

1. The wireless method – AirPlay

Prime Instant Video has a wonderful iOS app (free on the App Store), which is compatible with your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Of course, it lets you watch the rented movies or countless other subscription-included ones via this app. The best part is that it supports AirPlay and hence, can broadcast your favorite videos from Amazon Prime to your Apple TV.

How to?

Step 1: Download the free Amazon Instant Video app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Step 2: Sign in with your Amazon Prime subscription ID.

Step 3: Search for your favorite content or browse the limitless catalog and find the perfect movie for your mood.

Step 4: Start the movie and click on the AirPlay icon (displayed in the lower right) -> choose Apple TV.

The video should be now playing on your Apple TV. Sit back and watch the movie in full-screen on your HDTV.

2. The alternative method – HDMI out cable (no Apple TV needed)

HDMI out

In case AirPlay is giving you trouble, you can use an HDMI-out cable (Apple Digital AV Adapter is recommended) for the same. It works exactly like AirPlay, but may even be better in case of heavy videos.

Step 0: Get a HDMI-out cable for your device if you don’t have one already (Apple Digital AV Adapter: Lightning or 30-pin).

Step 1 – Step 3 are the same as for the first method.

Step 4: Plug in your AV adapter and connect it to your TV via a HDMI cable. You can use the second slot on the adapter with your lightning or 30-pin connector to charge your device simultaneously.

Step 5: Start the movie, sit back and watch it on your HDTV

Note: both methods require iOS 6 or later.

As already told, these methods do not provide a permanent solution nor an absolute replacement for watching Amazon Prime on Apple TV. But this can surely help you to evade the temptation put forth by the Amazon Fire TV, till the next-gen. Apple TV is announced.

NBC app AirPlay

NBC fans and Apple TV users – if you’re a member of both these categories, it’s time to celebrate. NBC has finally updated its iOS app with AirPlay. So if you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can start streaming your favorite TV episodes on your HDTV, starting today.

This is huge for NBC lovers because it eliminates the need of an active subscription to watch some of their popular shows on television. Till now, these TV shows wanted you to sign into Hulu or to a cable subscription service, before you could catch their frames on Apple TV.

Now, with the iOS app, you can watch all of the full-length videos for free, once they’re aired via the cables.  In short, you can enjoy popular NBC TV shows like “The Voice, The Blacklist, About a Boy, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Days of our Lives” in full HD on the big-screen and for free.
