A first look at Tablo’s live TV and DVR app for Apple TV 4 (video)

Nuvyyo’s new Tablo app is the first real live TV app on the Apple TV 4. The app is free but it requires you purchase additional hardware (Tablo DVR), antenna and TV guide service, because, obviously, Apple TV doesn’t have a coaxial connection in the back that you can hook up an antenna.

Tablo is not an IPTV app. It’s a hardware and service that gives you major networks over the air, like NBC, ABC, Fox, CBS, PBS, and as many channels as the antenna in or on your house can pick up.

You get a grid-style Program Guide and the ability to record single and multiple recordings. You also can manage recordings right from the app.

This is the best way to stop paying a monthly subscription to your cable provider and cut the cord for good.

Last year Apple stated: “The future of television is apps”. And they are correct.

Tablo offically launches its live TV and DVR app for Apple TV

Tablo has finally released a native Apple TV app that was unveiled and previewed at this year’s CES. The free app lets Tablo customers record and stream both live and recorded broadcast TV programs on their big screen TVs via the 4th gen. Apple TV.

The app works in conjunction with the networked Tablo DVR, a small $200 box that plugs into a digital TV antenna to capture free, local HDTV broadcast programs including news and sports within the US and Canada.

Unlike traditional DVRs that are connected to one TV, Tablo does not feature an HDMI connection – it connects to your home network using WiFi or Ethernet to stream content to any connected device inside your home or anywhere you have internet.

With version 1.0 of the Tablo App for Apple TV, customers can get access to their favorite network shows via both a Live TV guide and Recordings screens. One-time and series recordings can also be scheduled for programs airing within the next 24 hours.

Thanks to integration with Apple TV Siri Remote, Tablo users can easily skip commercials simply by asking Siri to jump ahead in the stream.

The app is said to provide “exceptionally fast performance during in-app navigation, as well as launching both live TV and recorded playback streams” thanks to the “superior processing power” of Apple TV 4.

Tablo also announced that the additional screens and features will be rolled out “over the coming months”.

ToonsTV Now Available on Apple TV 4

Rovio’s video-on-demand platform ToonsTV has arrived on Apple TV in time for Easter. Available as a free download with no in-app purchases, ToonsTV features more than 30 channels of video on-demand family entertainment, including Angry Birds Toons, Piggy Tales and Stella, as well as its educational Rocket Science Show, developed in cooperation with NASA.

ToonsTV is currently featuring an “Eggs, Eggs, Eggs” channel of Easter-themed episodes from the platform’s various properties, including “EggsHaustion,” an all-new episode of Angry Birds Toons.

Another major focus is a new series of humorous Easter Egg “unwrapping” videos, starring the feathered hands of Red from the Angry Birds flock.

The full listing of ToonsTV programming is available within the app and on the web at www.toons.tv.

ToonsTV is the company’s second app to launch for Apple TV. The first was the fast-paced racing title Angry Birds Go!, which arrived in App Stores in February and has since hit No. 1 on the Apple TV games download charts in 85 countries.

Disney Infinity 3.0 ‘Star Wars’ Edition launched for Apple TV 4

Disney launched Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition starter pack for the new Apple TV. It includes the SteelSeries Nimbus Wireless Controller and a black Bluetooth Disney Infinity Base and it is available now at Apple retail stores. The new Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition game is now available on the Apple TV App Store.

The game offers the “full Disney Infinity 3.0 experience”, including all 3.0 Play Sets, figures and Toy Box Expansion Games. In addition, all figures and Power Discs from the 1.0 and 2.0 editions of Disney Infinity are also compatible with the Apple TV version of the game.

The Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack for Apple TV is sold at $99.99 and include:

Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic Play Set piece
Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano figures
A Bluetooth enabled Disney Infinity base
Web code card for mobile and PC devices
SteelSeries Nimbus Wireless Controller

Pangea releases five tvOS games with support for 3DTV

Pangea Software, a veteran game developer for Mac and iOS has announced their game catalog for the Apple TV 4. All of Pangea’s tvOS games include support for 3DTVs.

Air Wings: A multiplayer flight game where you pilot various toy and paper airplanes and engage in dogfighting combat with online opponents.
Bugdom 2: An action-adventure game where you play a grasshopper who explores his amazing world.
Nanosaur 2: Pilot a time traveling pterodactyl from the future, and battle other dinosaurs, or battle online opponents in the three different multiplayer modes.
Nucleus: A modern take on the classic Asteroids-style game.
Otto Matic: An action-adventure game where you play a robot who’s mission is to save the humans from being abducted by the evil Brain Aliens.

All of Pangea’s games have the capability of playing in stereo-3D on any HDTV which is 3DTV capable. This not only adds an extra visual element to the games, but in many cases it gives the player an advantage since 3D makes it easier to aim weapons and calculate jumps.

Additionally, all of the games are Game Controller compatible, so they can be played with either the Siri Remote or with any tvOS compatible gamepad.

Pangea promises to bring more of their iOS game lineup to tvOS in the near future. Cro-Mag Rally and Air Wings Intergalactic will not be far away, and they also will be working on new, tvOS-specific games as well.

Anyone who owns the iOS version of any of their games will get the tvOS version for free, and vice-versa. Even the in-app purchases will automatically transfer between the two platforms, and the saved game progress will also sync among the devices, so a player who just completed level 5 of Otto Matic on his iPad can continue playing from there on his Apple TV.

BBC iPlayer app coming to Apple TV 4

This is something Apple TV users in UK have been looking for for years: the popular BBC iPlayer is coming to the new Apple TV “in the coming months”, BBC confirmed on Twitter.

According to BBC’s Leo Kelion, “the catch-up app is not ready to launch alongside the revamped set top box when it goes on sale this week, but the broadcaster signalled it would be soon.”

Altuought it hasn’t been confirmed by BBC, it very likely that iPlayer will only work on the 4th gen. Apple’s set-top box. AirPlaying content from iPhone/iPad to the HDTV will most probably remain the only option for Apple TV 2 and Apple TV 3 users to enjoy iPlayer offer on the big screen.

In his article at bbc.com, Kelion notes that “the BBC understands that ITV has no plans to release an app for Apple TV. Channel 4 and Channel 5’s intentions are unknown.”

Infuse coming to Apple TV 4, just not quite yet

Back in September FireCore announced that they were working on a tvOS version of their popular iOS app – Infuse. As the new Appe TV went on sale yesterday, the company confirmed that Infuse will most likely be availabe on the Apple TV App Store by the end of the year.

We were fortunate enough to receive one of the first pre-release units, and have been putting in long hours every day since. To date, we’ve made some great progress, but still have some work to do and are hoping to have this great new version of Infuse available on the App Store later this year.

FireCore is planning to open up a small beta group once thay get a bit closer to release, and if you are interested in being a part of this, you can sign up here.

Apple TV 4 now available to order

As announced by Tim Cook last week, the 4th generation Apple TV went on sale today and is now available to order from the Apple Online Store. First deliveries begin later this week.

Apple TV 4 is available in two storage options: 32GB model for $149 and 64GB model for $199.

HDMI cable is sold separately and Apple is offering it for $19. AppleCare Protection Plan for Apple TV is priced at $29.

Also available are a replacement Siri Remote for $79 and Remote Loop for $12.99.

4th gen. Apple TV runs the all-new tvOS operating system enabling iOS developers to create new apps and games specifically for Apple TV. Users will be able to download apps directly through the new Apple TV App Store.

GT Spirit for the new Apple TV: more than just racing

Created by Eden Games, a successfull gaming studio that specializes in high-profile AAA productions in the racing game genre, GT Spirit may be one of the most interesting games available on the new Apple TV when it launches in late October.

GT Spirit is a realistic driving experience, with fully simulated engines, powertrains, suspensions and aerodynamics. Players compete live with their online friends and foes through unlimited races, championships and daily events.

GT Spirit is claimed to be more than just racing game – it includes everything to do with cars. You can collect, upgrade and customize some of the “most gorgeous exotic vehicles” in your performance shop and see details including engine and interiors in full HD.

You will also be able to engineer specific parts to boost your machines beyond their maximum capacity.

The game runs on the latest Unity engine. It has been in development at Eden’s studio for the last 20 months.

GT Spirit will also be available on the Apple TV App Store i late October and on mobile at a later stage. Pre-registration is open for those who want to be kept in the loop.

Eden Games track record includes the creation of the V-Rally franchise, Need for Speed: Porsche and Test Drive Unlimited, among other major racing game hits on various consoles.

All Apple TV games must support Siri Remote

Apple has updated its App Programming Guide for tvOS to include one small, but very significant change: all Apple TV games that support third-party game controllers must also support the new Apple TV Siri Remote.

Requirements for Games That Support Game Controllers

Apple has created specific requirements you must follow for any game that supports game controllers. These requirements are designed to make sure that games are always playable.

Your game must support the Apple TV remote. Your game may not require the use of a controller.
tvOS games that support controllers must support the extended control layout. All controllers for tvOS are nonformfitting extended controllers.
Games must be playable using standalone controllers. If you support an extended controller, the game must be playable solely with that controller.
You must support the pause button. All controllers include a pause button. When gameplay is active, pressing the pause button should pause gameplay. When the game is not being played, such as when you are at a menu screen, the pause button moves to a previous screen of content.

The phrase: “Your game may not require the use of a controller” means that all Apple TV games must be playable solely with the Siri Remote, which will be bundled with the new Apple TV.

This new policy can be a serious constraint to the development of games for tvOS and may cripple some developers that have already designed their sophisticated and complex games to be playable, and fully enjoyable, only with third-party controllers.

This can also mean that Apple is actually not planning to fix what’s wrong with console gaming today (or at least not anytime soon).

On the other hand, this is a good news for many Apple TV users (and especially for casual gamers), who will be able to play every game they buy from the Apple TV App Store, even if they don’t own a third-party controller.

The new Apple TV will be available at the end of October starting at $149 for a 32GB model and $199 for a 64GB model.
