Nuvyyo’s new Tablo app is the first real live TV app on the Apple TV 4. The app is free but it requires you purchase additional hardware (Tablo DVR), antenna and TV guide service, because, obviously, Apple TV doesn’t have a coaxial connection in the back that you can hook up an antenna.

Tablo is not an IPTV app. It’s a hardware and service that gives you major networks over the air, like NBC, ABC, Fox, CBS, PBS, and as many channels as the antenna in or on your house can pick up.

You get a grid-style Program Guide and the ability to record single and multiple recordings. You also can manage recordings right from the app.

This is the best way to stop paying a monthly subscription to your cable provider and cut the cord for good.

Last year Apple stated: “The future of television is apps”. And they are correct.

Slides is Google’s answer to MS PowerPoint and Apple’s Keynote. It is cloud based and let’s you create presentations on the go, to be accessed from anywhere on any device. The Slides app for iOS just got updated with AirPlay support, making it more appealing to Apple TV users.

Once you start the slideshow over AirPlay, your iPhone or iPad screen turns into presenter’s best assistant. It shows a preview of your current slide on top and below that, you can have your notes for the presentation. You can also place a timer for each slide to make sure you stay within the allotted time limit.

When you’re up on the big screen, you can use your smaller screen to advance slides, view speaker notes and stay on track with a built-in timer. This way you can focus more on telling your story and engaging your audience…instead of on logistics.

The update also adds Google Cast support, which means you will be able to broadcast to Chromecast and Android TV as well, from the iOS app.

So if you are an avid Google user or would like to make use of Google Doc’s free 15 GB document storage, you can get the Google Slides app for iPhone and iPad from the App Store for free.

It’s just been a few days since Apple TV added Cricket Australia, that it’s picked up another sports channel. This time it’s the Tennis Channel Everywhere app, which is the Apple TV counterpart of Tennis Channel.

Tennis Channel Everywhere is a premiere live sports content App and desktop experience designed for iOS, Android and other devices, such as Apple TV, with internet access. It’s main features include 1) Live Streaming of Tennis Channel 2) Live Streaming of a new 24/7 subscription network called Tennis Channel Plus and 3) On-Demand viewing library featuring encores of full length matches as well as original programming.

Tennis Channel Everywhere brings both free and paid content. As expected, the free zone only let’s you access the highlights of some recent matches.

Whereas the premium will open doors to a huge library of on-demand content as well as live coverage of popular tennis games. Unlike others who like to hold back hallmark contents from Apple TV, Tennis Channel Everywhere subscribers will be able to enjoy even the Australian Open 2015  and the 2015 French Open in June.

The subscription will set you back $69.99/year and will of course, carry over to iPhone and iPad apps of the channel. On the other hand, subscribers of AT&T U-Verse, Cox, DISH, DirecTV, and Verizon FiOS will be able access the premium contents just via their cable accounts.

The channel is available with an over-the-air update and Apple TV users in the US should start seeing the Tennis Channel Everywhere icon now on their homescreens.

We first heard about AllCast more than a year back when it was shown off in beta on Android. Coming from the Cyanogen Mode developer Koushik Dutt, it promised the ability to mirror your phone to a variety of devices including Apple TV. Last month, it went out of beta on Android and a few days back, popped up on the App Store.

AllCast iOS app lets you stream photos, slideshows, videos and music to your television from your iPhone or iPad. But what makes it unique and different from the native AirPlay feature, is the wide range of devices and services that it supports.

The devices to which AllCast can push your media include Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Roku, WDTV and Chrome. Besides, all DLNA receivers and smart televisions from Samsung, Sony and Panasonic are supported.

On the other end, your media can come from a variety of sources and services like your Camera Roll, Music app, Google Plus library, Instagram account, Dropbox album, Google Drive files and any media servers.

The AllCast app is avaialble for free on the App Store. However, this version is ad supported, has a limit on streamable video length and a splash screen, all of which can be removed with an in-app purchase of $4.99.

So, if you have a wide range of media devices in your living room or have your photos and videos spread across multiple cloud storage services, AllCast is for you.

Remember the AirBrowser app? We reported its launch earlier this year and, in our hands on look, concluded it as “a good option to look into” for anyone who wants to browse the internet on the HDTV via Apple TV. It’s been a few months since the release and a bunch of updates claim to have manifolded the AirBrowser experience. And today, we’ll see if that claim holds up in our tests.

Spoiler alert: it does!

Air Browser gives you a full desktop internet browser experience, but without a PC. All you need is an iOS device and an Apple TV (or a supported HDMI Cable).

You will be able to surf the web, to watch streaming videos in full screen on your TV, to read newspapers and anything else you normally do with a standard PC or a Mac browser. Pinch to zoom, swipe gesture to navigate through the navigation history, an easy to use multi tab system, bookmarks and more.

Getting Connected with AirBrowser

IMG_6125

To be honest, I have never had any difficulties in connecting any AirPlay apps to Apple TV, and AirBrowser is no exception. Even if you’re using AirPlay for the first time, there is an animated step-by-step guide which loads on start up and guides you through this (swipe up the Control Centre, tap AirPlay, select Apple TV and turn on Mirroring). Google loads up immediately on your Apple TV, while the iPhone or iPad is turned into a touchpad.

Browsing on Apple TV with AirBrowser

IMG_4617.JPG

Not sure if it’s because we’ve been serially downgrading our screen sizes from the 22-inch desktop monitors to 4-inch mobile screen, but thinking of browsing on an HDTV kind of scares us or at least seems like an overdo. But from my experience, after an awkward ten minutes or so, you just start enjoying the full screen browsing and you find it hard to go back. Apple.com has never looked more beautiful and watching 1080p YouTube videos on the 50 inch screen is mesmerizing.

Since you’re seated on your couch much away from the television screen, things just feel normal and clearer, rather than overblown. AirBrowser really adds to the experience by its intuitive controls and if you’re a Mac user, you’ll instantly fall into the slot. Use single finger for moving the cursor, two for scrolling, pinch gestures for zooming and taps to open links. The best thing, whenever you tap on a text field, a virtual keyboard pops up on your iPhone/iPad and you can type on it just like with a physical wireless keyboard.

In our tests, the websites loaded quickly and the cursor movements didn’t show any noticeable lag. The navigation is similar to Macs not only in terms of the gestures, but the capacitive touch screen of your iOS device works so fluidly, that its feel is comparable to the touch pads on MacBooks.

AirBrowser’s custom features

IMG_6147.JPG

Besides the central mirroring ability, AirBrowser comes packed with a wide range of options which makes it as powerful as most browsers for iPhone.

Note: The first thing you need to do after setting up the app is go into the Settings tab and toggle the Size pages to fit’mode on. Else some websites will load ‘boxed’ instead of full screen and spoils the whole fun.

AirBrowser supports multitabs, meaning you can have many tabs open at the same time. Switching between tabs is as easy as a ‘tap and swipe’.

There is a separate Bookmarks and History manager for the app. Also you can access the recently opened pages via the Grid icon in the app. This will show up as a tab on the TV screen and can be selected directly over there, instead of you looking down into your device every time.

IMG_4616.JPG

On the iPad/iPhone screen, you do have the options to load the desktop or mobile versions but I highly recommend keeping it to the former. Also, the webpages can easily be shared from here via AirDrop, Message, Mail and more.

Compatibility

AirBrowser is compatible with iPhone 4S and up, iPad 2 and up, and iPod Touch 5th gen. It can stream to Apple TV 2nd gen and Apple TV 3rd gen. If you have doubts as to how well your devices will work with the app, Airbrowser has a dedicated checker app for the same. You can get it here for free.

Verdict

I have used a couple of other AirPlay browsers as well as some normal iOS browsers over AirPlay. But, unlike others, AirBrowser seems to concentrate on just this one thing, to the point that there is no standalone browsing. And such a focus surely shows through in its execution, as AirBrowser is noticeably faster, powerful and more intuitive now, than what I saw back in July.

In short, AirBrowser is the most premium experience I’ve ever had with any AirPlay browsers. If your job involves showing off websites or articles or web pages over AirAplay, the 1080p output of AirBrowser is something you shouldn’t miss. Even for normal home users who’re holding out just because you think HDTV browsing is awkward, should try AirBrowser to realize it isn’t.

Demarca, the developers behind some of the most beautiful apps on the App Store is back after Dearest Bialowieza Forest and Nature’s Beauty Wallpapers with another stunner, the Bison bonasus.

Photographer Krzysztof Onikijuk spent some significant time in the wild, capturing precious snaps of the European Bison (Bison bonasus) with his camera. If you’ve never really thought of bisons as magnificent creatures, this “Nature Photography Album” should change that.

“Meet the heaviest surviving wild land animal in Europe – the European bison  – seen thru the lens of Krzysztof Onikijuk, nature photographer from Poland.

This album contains over 100 high quality images of the European bison and other inhabitants of the Bialowieza Forest, one of the last and largest remaining parts of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain.”

The app features support for dual screen AirPlay mirroring: just start the Diaporama mode, find the AirPlay icon and your iPad/iPhone screen will turn itself into a remote to change the pics or pause the show, while your HDTV will start lighting up with some wonderful colors.

Just like Demarca’s previous apps, Bison Bonasus is basically a beautifully executed slideshow of breathtaking photos, coupled with some soothing music in the background. Not only European Bisons, but flowing rivers, snowy woods, Pygmy owls and Hazel hens also take the stage.

Besides, many pics come with quotes by locals, historical notes and photographer comments on how the photo came to be. And on the iOS screen, you can save the pics to your camera roll, share them on social media or fast forward through the gallery of 114 pics.

“It’s as if Krzysztof was painting them, proving that photography really is an art,” says Elzbieta Dzikowska and she couldn’t be more right.

In the end, if you love watching The Discovery Channel or The Animal Planet, this app is going to give you goosebumps.

apple-tv-remote-concept

Product designer Radu Dutzan has come up with something all Apple TV users have been dreaming of for quite some time – a better way to navigate Apple TV menus. Apple has been relentlessly adding new channels once every couple of weeks and each of them comes packed with still another set of options. The number of remote clicks that stands between you and your favorite content is getting painfully high and that is where Dutzan’s concept comes in.

He completely re-imagines the Apple remote (image on top). In addition to the basic Play/Pause, Stop and Menu buttons, Radu’s remote comes with a built-in touch pad. It feels somewhat like the Magicpad and the swipes work like what we’re used to on our iPhones and iPads. A flick will send the menu for an inertial scrolling, while short swipes scroll the options one-by-one. You really need to see the below video to capture it.

Since it isn’t possible to physically create such a remote now, Dutzan has developed an iOS app which AirPlays to your Apple TV and gives you an idea on how this would work.

This is nothing like the official Remote app, if that’s what is going through your mind now. In fact, if you have a developer account with Apple, you can try it out for yourself. You’ll find the code here at Github.

apple-tv-ui-concept-02

Besides the new remote, Dutzan also conceives how the Apple TV interface could be redesigned to take full advantage of the new navigation system and still stick to its iOS 7 translucent behaviours (image above). And it looks awesome!

You can read Dutzan’s whole article on Medium.
