This Apple TV offering refresh comes just a day after Apple added TED Talks, Tastemade and Young Hollywood channels to its set-top box.

On a similar note, Apple is working on their own standalone streaming service, and the HBO NOW service is coming to Apple TV next month. Also, Apple TV 4 with a new interface, upgraded specs, own App Store and Siri integration is expected to be unveiled in June.

CBS News on Apple TV

It’s not over, people! Yet another channel made it to Apple TV screens in the form of CBS News. It is really overwhelming to find that the channel appeared on Apple TV just hours after it was unveiled, and even before it hit the App Store and Google Play store.

The CBSN service is supposedly a direct competitor to the HuffPost Live, as it brings the hottest news for streaming in real time. You can keep up with the latest happenings, on all weekdays from 9 am to 12 night, right on your Apple TV. In addition, it brings VOD contents of previous programs like CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, Sunday Morning and Face the Nation.

Besides the CBSN service, the channel also provides access to other CBS affiliated streams like those from CBS Sports and Entertainment Tonight.

The best part is that you can access all of these contents for free. Yes, there is no subscription charges or the need to login via cable operator accounts. However, the catch is that you’ll have to bear with some ads in between, which might just be the deal breaker for many cord cutters.

The channel should be automatically available to all users by now or else, you can try updating your firmware or rebooting your Apple TV.

The features include

  • Live, anchored coverage from 9:00 AM – midnight ET every weekday;
  • Simulcasts of CBS News special reports for breaking news;
  • Additional content from a range of CBS sources including CBS News, CBS affiliate stations, CNET, CBSSports.com, Entertainment Tonight and more;
  • Accessibility across key connected TV devices including Amazon Fire TV, Roku players, Roku TV™ and others, as well as additional core CBS News digital platforms including CBSNews.com, its mobile website and the newly launched CBS News app for Windows 8/8.1 and Windows Phone 8/8.1 available through the Windows Store and Windows Phone Store. CBSN will also be available on the CBS News apps for Android and other leading platforms before the end of the year.
  • Personal choice and control through DVR-like functionality that enable viewers to watch the segments they’re interested in or tune into the live programming seamlessly;
  • The ability to share content from the experience via social media accounts with compatible devices;
  • The opportunity for advertisers to reach engaged news consumers with custom ad integrations.

To all those who’ve been doubting the future of Apple’s set top box, it’s time to take a deep breath and wait.

Apple TV new channels

Users turning on their Apple TV today will be surprised by an increase in the number of channels clashing it up on their big screens. That’s because Apple TV just gained four new channels – ABC News, PBS Kids, AOL On & Willow TV, and a redesigned Flickr channel.

ABC News is probably the most important addition here. Users can access all the content available at ABCnews.com via this app, including 24/7 live and on-demand content, hourly video updates, local content from 9 stations, their original video series, Editor-chosen special stories and ABS News archives. Unlike Watch ABC which requires you to sign in with a cable provider account for access, the ABC News contents are available to all for free. However, the channel currently seems to be not functioning properly, at least for me.

“Immediate Access to Live & On-Demand Video Content, Entertainment News, Live Hourly Updates, Original Programming and Video Highlights from “Good Morning America,” “World News,” “Nightline,” “20/20” and “This Week” 24/7”

PBS Kids now becomes the second channel from PBS to appear on Apple TV and provides access to the child-oriented and educational programmes from the network. Like ABC News, this one doesn’t require an active cable connection to enjoy. However it does require a free online activation, which can be completed by following a few simple on-screen instructions.

Apple TV Channel PBS Kids

AOL On is somewhat like an Apple TV Client for their website where all the AOL content including sports, news and AOL original shows are available.

AOL On Apple TV Channel

Willow TV brings the coverage of Cricket Matches to the United States and Canada on Apple TV, including streaming of live matches (IPL too), VOD Replays of games and also the highlights of past games. However it requires an active subscription for $15/month.

Apple TV Willow TV Channel

Flickr channel has gained a new sparkly icon and an internal redesign. Now you have a beautiful home screen to Explore popular photos, a better Search and a “Your Flickr” tab to view your photos.

The Wider Image app for ipad on apple tvThe Wider Image is an award-winning photojournalism app from Thompson Reuters. It is a fresh take on reporting stories among news apps, revolving mostly around photographs. Stunning snaps taken by renowned journalists are stacked, with intermittent text, interactive sections, audio, stats and more. The app just got updated bringing a bunch of new features and for us, Apple TV users, AirPlay compatibility is the noteworthy one.

The jaw dropping loading screen drives you into a grid of featured photographs, each having its own story to tell. Select one and your iPad shows the article in a typical blogpost fashion, while the Apple TV puts forth the featured image in full screen. You can select other pictures, country stats or author bio and all are stunningly animated on the Apple TV. Interactive pictures and slide show modes are also present.

The Wider Image Airplay Mirroring

So far so good. But is this update as huge as some claim to be? Not really. First of all, though shown in full screen, these are not HD images which look great from 5m aways, but fades, blurs and pixelates as you look closer. Reuters wants you to subscribe to a monthly ($1.99) or quarterly ($5.99) plan for the HD edition. Anyway that’s understandable, ‘coz these are some breath-taking pictures we’re talking about here.

Ellen Oscar Selfie on The Wider Image

But the whole AirPlay setup in The Wider Image app seems a little funny to me. Once you take up the post, the same photo is AirPlayed till you end reading and exit, unless you select another one. Selecting other images, country statistics or author info, would bring it up both on the iPad and the Apple TV, which doesn’t make sense. What a normal reader wants (at least for me) is to show the featured image when he starts reading and as he scrolls down and comes across another photograph, that should automatically be mirrored even without selecting it. This would help him to comfortably read the content, look up to the television for a good look at the image and continue downwards.

It is odd that the world’s greatest news agency has left such a large room for improvement in the user experience department. Hopefully other reviews and user feedbacks have already brought it up to their notice and they’ll be bringing changes in the next update. So if you’re really into photojournalism and can put up with a little hiccupps, you can get The Wider Image app from the App Store for free.

Other new features in The Wider Image 3.0 update:

– Infinite stream of stories on the home screen
– Search stories, photographers and countries across the archive
– Browse 10 new themes. From ‘Cultural Atlas’ to ‘Living Planet’, there’s something for everyone.
– Enjoy striking images on your widescreen television, streamed wirelessly to Apple TV
– Even more image detail for retina displays with optional HD subscription
– Redesigned Explore screen shows stories on a world map
– Redesigned My View screen enables you to select photographers and countries to follow. All your favourites are now in one place.

1. AirPlay mirroring coming to iPhone 5

A source told TUAW that iPhone 5 will also feature AirPlay mirroring that lets wirelessly display everything you do on your iPhone right on your HDTV through Apple TV 2. We’ve been all expecting it but it can also be a… rumor.

2. Anatomy of an Apple Rumor

“Everyone, including your mom, re-reports Apple rumors,” claims PCMmag. The guys at the Magazine have a great infographic that shows the anatomy of an Apple Rumor. We know how it ends, but how it all begins? And what is your role in this process? Check it out on this graphic.

3. Let’s talk… new Apple TV?

Apple has finally announced that its upcoming media event will take place on Tuesday, October 4 at 10am Pacific Daylight Time on Apple’s campus in Cupertino and will be led by Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook. There are no doubts that Apple will focus specifically on a new iPhone, but is there a chance that Tim will surprise us with the updated of the company’s “hobby device”? There were some speculations that Apple may be releasing a new Apple TV with A5 chip making the device capable of true 1080p.

4. Killer iPhone feature?

9to5Mac reports that, according to a source familiar with the SOC’s manufacturing, the new iPhone will feature Apple’s dual-core A5 processor, 1GB of RAM and improved, 8 megapixel camera. But the new device’s biggest selling point and a game changer may be a software feature called Assistant – a Siri-inspired, system-wide voice navigation system. The phrase on this year’s invite, ‘Let’s talk iPhone,’ seems to confirm this. Check out 9to5Mac’s article to learn more on how the Assistant works.

4. Sharing some love

Our Facebook fan Erick Ramirez wanted to “share some love” to Apple TV Hacks by creatively playing with our logo. LOL, thanks Eric, we are impressed! We share some love too!

1. Apple to build 3D TV system

Ben Kunz from Thought Gadgets predicts that Apple will soon get in the television business and build a 3D TV system. The trigger for his prediction was a patent that Apple won last year: the company wants to use Microsoft Kinect-type movement tracking to determine where the eyes of every person watching the TV in the same room are and then project separate beams of light to both of each user’s eyes making it possible for every person in the room to experience 3D without glasses. Kunz even thinks that thanks to this “truly holographic experience” plane travel could become a thing of the past!

2. Apps coming to the Apple TV

We all know that one of the next big things for Apple will be apps for the Apple TV. Developer Michael Gile predicts that “Apple TV will be the most successful game console in history.” He took the stage at 360iDev in Denver and showed off the code he’s already gotten running on the Apple TV and demoed an  app that let him to load up and play media assets. Gile also revealed that he’s working on porting Wolfenstein 3D and Quake over to the Apple TV’s system and announced that he’ll be releasing a version of the cocos2D iOS development platform that will also work with the Apple TV. Be ready for apps!

TUAW: 360iDev: Getting ready for apps on the Apple TV

3. Adobe AIR 3 games for iOS

It looks like Gile and other developers will soon have another option for making apps for iOS. Adobe has announced version 3 of its AIR software that is said to allow game publishers to deliver console-quality 2D and 3D games to any device running on iOS. Adobe promises that with AIR 3 developers will be able to deliver a “new class of gaming, premium video experiences, as well as sophisticated, data-driven applications” across devices, including the iPhone and iPad.

AppleInsider: Adobe promises ‘console quality’ games on iPhone, iPad with cross-platform AIR 3

4. The Pear TV

Our Facebook fan Steve has found and shared with us on our page that on the show iCarly, instead of using “Apple”, they use “Pear”, as in Pear Phone and Pear Pad. He posted a photo of his TV screen on which we can see the characters watching… the “Pear TV”. You can see it here.

Edition 3:

1. Flash coming to iOS
2. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
3. Closed-captioned episodes in iTunes
4. Updated MacBook Pro line

—————-

1. Flash finally coming to iOS

Every day there are more and more websites with iOS-friendly non-Flash content and there is the famous, amazing Skyfire app (which I use a lot) that lets you play any Flash video on your iPhone or iPad but, still, it’s obvious it would make the life of every iDevice user much easier if there was simpler way to get Flash content. Well, it seems Adobe has finally found a way to bypass Apple’s restrictions on Flash – recently announced Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5 will allow the publishers to push every Flash content to any iOS device.

Read more on iPhoners.org or go to the BGR’s article for more details on how it will exactly work.

2. Deus Ex: Human Revolution coming to the Mac

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the critically-acclaimed prequel to the legendary Deus Ex will finally have a native Mac version! The game will be released this winter.

What is Deus EX: HR about? Players control ex-SWAT commander Adam Jensen, who is forced to undergo cybernetic augmentation and thrown into the heart of a global conspiracy. He finds himself in a world where only those who adapt survive.

Watch the trailer to dive deeper into the unique atmosphere of this legendary game.

3. Closed-captioned episodes now available to iTunes Store

AppleInsider has discovered that some TV studios (Fox, FX, CW and ABC) have quietly begun adding closed captioning to some TV shows on iTunes. You can now watch the current seasons of closed-captioned “Sons of Anarchy,” “New Girl,” “Switched at Birth” and “The Secret Circle,” (more to come, hopefully) to improve your literacy skills (really, that’s what FCC says). But seriously, it’s very helpful for all TV shows lovers with hearing disabilities. To enable closed captioning on the Apple TV, go to Settings > Video.

AppleInsider: TV studios quietly adding closed-captioned episodes to iTunes Store

4. Apple to update MacBook Pro line this month

AppleInsider has a fresh, “exclusive” rumor about much-anticipated refresh of MacBook Pro line. According to sources speaking to the site, Apple is planning to release the new MacBooks Pro before the end of this year, even as early as the end of September. AppleInsider has been told that, since Intel’s next-generation Core i-Series mobile platform is not expected until the second quarter of 2012, the MacBook Pro refresh will deliver “marginal speed bumps to the notebooks’ processors but will otherwise introduce no material changes over the existing models.”

And here are some more rumors about the iPhone 5 and iOS 5:
