2015 wwdc - Events channel

Apple just updated the Events channel on the Apple TV announcing that they will stream the WWDC 2015 keynote live on June 8th, at 10 am Pacific Time.

This isn’t something new. Whenever Apple decides to broadcast their events, Apple TV users get to enjoy it via the Events channel. However, this time things are a bit different.

Usually in such cases, Apple updates their website first, at apple.com/live, announcing the live stream to be available on the web and iOS devices. We then have to wait a couple of days or even till a few hours before the event for the Events channel to be updated on the Apple TV.

This time Apple has refreshed the Apple TV channel a week before the event and, more interestingly, there is no sign of the announcement on their website yet. This might be an indication as to how special the event would be for Apple TV users. Is it yet another proof that the Apple TV 4 will be launched at the event?

Apple has a long history of hiding major event highlights in their invites, illustrations and tag lines. This might very well be one of those. Even in the WWDC 2015 logo, observant users swear that the background square with rounded edges refers to the next Apple TV’s footprint.

In the end, these omens just confirm our previous reports that the Apple TV 4 will be unveiled on Monday. We believe it to be slimmer, pack a redesigned interface and a new OS with support for Siri and third party apps.

"SlashGear Apple Watch Media Event in March"

Tim Cook started today’s Apple Watch event by talking about the Apple TV. This had me at the edge of my seat, because despite these reports, I hoped for the Apple TV 4. Though that didn’t happen, the current generation of Apple TV did receive a huge price cut.

You can buy a new Apple TV 3 today for just $69. That is a 30% cut from its previous $99 pricing, and is a quite significant one. The refurbished Apple TV 3 is still cheaper at $59.

Apple TV 69

This isn’t the first time Apple has provided offers with the purchase of Apple TVs. Last year, Apple ran two different campaigns in March and August where they gave away $25 iTunes Gift Cards with every set top box.

Tim Cook mentioned Apple TV as the category leader in streaming devices with a total of 25 million boxes already sold. Apple justifies the price cut claiming that they want to make the device more accessible.

While this might be true at some level, we couldn’t help but wonder if this is Apple’s way of clearing the shelves for the next Apple TV. According to Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac, a slimmer Apple TV with a new UI and standalone App Store is in the works and will be available by the end of this year.

In case you missed other Apple TV stories from today’s event, HBO is bringing their standalone streaming service, HBO Now to Apple TV in April. You can read more here.

Apple will be hosting (and live streaming) an event on March 9. Judging by Apple’s track record of cryptic invites, the “Spring Forward” tagline shouts out that the event will be mostly about the Apple Watch. But there are some goodies hidden somewhere here for us Apple TV users, too.

First of all, let’s hope for Apple TV 4. While Apple Watch is sure to take the center stage, the possibility of an Apple TV refresh cannot be ruled out yet. Apple’s beloved ex-hobby device‘s refresh is too much delayed and reliable rumors point to an imminent launch.

As iMore’s Rene Ritchie notes, the Spring event of 2012 is when we saw the last Apple TV get announced and he wouldn’t be surprised if it takes the stage this year as well.

Apple has had spring events before [..] The last Apple TV was introduced at the last spring iPad event. Rumor has it there’s a new Apple TV in the works.

Secondly, the release of the Apple Watch will open up a whole new range of possibilities for existing Apple TVs. Your little black box may be able to do much more, once you have Cupertino’s smart watch on your wrist. This includes using Apple Watch as a remote for your Apple TV or AirPlaying music and photos to it.

I have discussed this in detail in an earlier post – Apple Watch and AirPlay: what Apple’s smartwatch means to Apple TV users.

Apple Watch Apple TV Remote

Anyway, only next Monday will tell us what lies behind that veil and how Apple TV users will benefit from it. By the way, you will be able to watch the March 9 event directly on your Apple TV via an Events channel which will get added to your home screen soon.

Live streaming video requires Safari 5.1.10 or later on OS X v10.6.8 or later; Safari on iOS 6.0 or later. Streaming via Apple TV requires second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 6.2 or later.

You can visit Apple’s dedicated subsite and get a reminder for the event with just a click.

Apple has sent out invites for their special event to be held tomorrow. It is expected that Apple will unveil the next generation iPad Air, new Macs and release OS X Yosemite at the event. Though the initial rumors placed Apple TV 4 for an early 2015 launch, the tagline of the event’s invite, “It’s been way too long” gives some hope to Apple TV fans too. Read more here.

The latest beta of Apple TV 7.0.1 software turned Apple TV into the master of HomeKit, so there will be no surprise if Apple announce something regarding this topic too.

If you aren’t one of the handful of lucky media persons who received the invite, you can catch a live stream of the event on any of your Apple devices, including the Apple TV.

It’s been way too long.
Join us here at apple.com/live on October 16 at 10 a.m. PDT to watch our special event live.
Live streaming video requires Safari 5.1.10 or later on OS X v10.6.8 or later; Safari on iOS 6.0 or later. Streaming via Apple TV requires second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 6.2 or later.

The Events channel, added in the first week of September for the iPhone 6 event, is no longer available on Apple TV. This channel will likely make a reappearance tomorrow and will bring the live stream of the Apple special event to your living room. As usual, the event will begin at 10 am PDT (create a reminder).

As you might remember, Apple’s stream of the iPhone 6 event was so buggy that it was practically unwatchable. Apple engineers are probably working hard to prevent a recurrence and hopefully, you’ll get a better view of Tim, Phil and Craig this time.

WWDC Live Stream on Apple TV

No one really knows how Apple chooses which of the keynotes they’ll be streaming live and which not. I still remember tuning into the live blogging articles on various tech blogs for iPhone 5S and iPad Air launches. 6 months later, Apple announced that they’ll be broadcasting the WWDC 2014 keynote live for everyone. You can find the announcement on their website with the image above and a prompt on some “exciting announcements”.

As usual, the event can be streamed from Apple.com on any iOS device running iOS 4.2 or up, Macs with OS X 10.6 and above, and on Windows PCs with Quicktime installed. Also via a temporary “Apple Events” channel on Apple TV 2nd and 3rd gen. running 5.0.2 or newer, just like last year’s WWDC.

wwdc_2013_apple_tv_2

At this WWDC, we’re expecting the iOS 8 with the rumored Healthbook app, a redesigned OS X 10.10 and the refreshed Macbook Air and cheaper iMacs. Though not very compelling, some rumors of the next Apple TV announcement (not launch) has also been humming around. Read on: What does WWDC 2014 have in store for Apple TV?
