Apple released the third-generation Apple TV with remote in March 2012. Even after the release of the Apple TV 4, the company continued to sell the 3rd generation device at a cheaper price.

However, with the release of tvOS and Apple TV 4, the company believes its time to stop production of the 3rd gen Apple TV.

Apple TV 3 Discontinued

Apple sent out an email to its employees and other partners stating the discontinuation of Apple TV 3.

Effective immediately, Apple TV (3rd generation), MD/199LL/A, has reached end of life and is now discontinued. The Apple Supply team is going to fulfill all shippable backlog.

The company will be concentrating on tvOS for the 4th gen Apple TV for now. Of course, Apple probably also has new models in the pipeline.

Below is the email that Apple sent to its employees and some partners, obtained by 9to5Mac.

We saw this coming. Last month, Apple removed the Apple TV 3 from the main page of its online store. Retail stores started to clear out their shelves as well. But now, it is confirmed. The company hasn’t given out any public statement about the discontinuation yet.

Apple will still sell you refurbished 3rd Gen Apple TV’s for $59 and you can find them at some stores such as Staples. You can buy one, for the same price as an Apple refurb, at Staples. If there are any order backlogs, Apple will complete those orders.

Those looking at buying a refurbished Apple TV should know that the stocks will be limited and will run out soon.

It appears that there is still stock available, but the company doesn’t want to sell the ATV 3 anymore. Instead, Apple is urging customers to check out the Apple TV 4.

We’re not sure if Apple will continue to provide Software Updates for the third gen Apple TV. The last Apple TV 3 update was released in February 2016.

So yeah, the Apple TV 3rd generation has been discontinued. You can buy the Apple TV 4th gen with Siri Remote for $149 instead.

Apple has just released a minor software update for Apple TV 3. According to the official release note, Apple TV Software Update 7.2.1 only includes “general performance and stability improvements.” However, Apple also posted a security document listing a whole bunch of security fixes included in the new firmware.

If you don’t have automatic updates turned on, go to Settings -> Software Update and select “Download and Install” to apply for the update.

Back in January Apple released the first beta of tvOS 9.2 for Apple TV 4 that adds Podcasts app, support for Bluetooth keyboards, folders for grouping apps, new Siri languages and a new app switcher. The final version of tvOS 9.2 is expected to be released  in March.

It would seem that Apple is playing friendly with the folks at The Verge and granted them some unique information pertaining to the new Apple TV that has shown up in the latest FCC filings. According to their team, Apple has clarified issues pertaining to the new Apple TV, model A1469, stating that Apple Inc. will not be releasing a smaller Apple TV. They are actually releasing an device that only contains “minor component changes.” One item that seems of interest is that these FCC filings seem to reveal that there may be an upgrade to the new A5x processor, but The Verge was unable to confirm this information.

As of now, it would seem there is no difference between the new model and the current iteration of the Apple TV 3. Apple claims the difference will only be noticeable to those who pay attention to the model number. Though, we do believe there is more to the story than Apple is sharing, but it is unclear what it could be. For now, we will wait, watch and report back to all of you as soon as there is news to share.

We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don’t affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.

This box, alone, does not reveal much regarding Apples plans for what is to come next other than the fact that, in true Apple fashion, this device is half centimeter smaller than its predecessor and that it will be powered by Apple’s A5X processor and will use the same Broadcom WLAN+Bluetooth antenna/chip that the iPhone 5 uses. As of now, the largest change Apple made between its last  two “hobby” devices is the fact that one supports 720p and the other supports true 1080p. Could the next iteration be a similar jump? I foe one am hoping not! I am sure we can all agree that Apple needs to get back to innovating and get away from simply resizing.

To add a bit more fuel to the curiosity flame, 9to5Mac revealed that the latest Apple TV firmware (5.2), released this week, seems to include mention of a mystery Apple TV, named “3,2.” Our current Apple TV 3’s are known as “3,1.” It would seem that Apple has something coming quite soon. The question is if this a completely new box with some cool new capabilities, a peek at what Apple has in store next, or perhaps a simple rearrangement of internal hardware, now that parts are a bit cheaper?

The folks at appletv3jailbreak.com have recently announced that they will be releasing the first Apple TV 3 jailbreak. For those of you who pay attention, it was not even a month ago that the jailbreak community was buzzing with word of the Dream JB that was set to be released in December of 2012. It was no shock to us, or others, that this news was FAKE! Apple TV Hacks reported on it then, and it seems we need to do it again now. So, boys and girls, it is time for Jailbreak Scam Watch 2013!

Let us go ahead and break this story down for you, our dear readers. This news is FAKE. There is a simple rule that I learned long ago, and I have decided to share it with you today, “if it looks to good to be true, it likely is.” There is always one thing to look for when it comes to jailbreak releases, regardless of the device. If you are looking for jailbreak news for Apple TV’s, iPhone’s, iPad’s, or any other devices you need to consider your sources.

The jailbreak community, in regards to developers and coders that work for the good of us all, has become a well-established group of trustworthy people. If you think about it, the name pod2g was not one that was big in our community for a long time. Then suddenly, and seemingly out of the blue, there was this developer breaking down walls with iOS 5. He did not release information by circumventing the established community. Instead, the folks who were in the game since the beginning acknowledged pod2g, and our community benefitted.

Be cautious. Be careful. Be skeptical. Above all – don’t pay for a jailbreak. In the end, if a real jailbreak for Apple TV 3 comes out, we here at Apple TV Hacks will have a confirmation story, links, and guides.
