There are apps in the App Store that can do similar things (e.g. IMDb, Fandango), but Showreel is claimed to be the first AirPlay-enabled app that lets you watch full length HD movie trailers on Apple TV 2. Although the developer promises to “showcase nothing but the latest and greatest movies”, the movies are, well, not the latest releases and the collection is still quite small. On a good side, trailers are updated weekly, there are no ads and pre-trailer commercials, and the browsing experience on iPad as well as viewing trailers on the big screen in 720p is great. The app is iPad only.

Showreel is available on the App Store for $2.99.

Not later than yesterday, we wrote about Apple’s rumored plans not to push any hardware update for the Apple TV this fall and instead focus on software updates… and here it is: the Coupertino-based company just released Apple TV Software Update 4.3 (build 8F455) that adds Vimeo support and – more importantly – the ability to purchase TV shows from iTunes directly from your Apple TV.

Apple has already confirmed that shows purchased on Apple TV can be re-downloaded on other iOS devices (TV shows has been added to the “Purchased” sections of iTunes on both iOS and Mac/PC applications). All the shows previously purchased on other iOS devices or with iTunes automatically show up as available to play on Apple TV.

“In other words, Apple just rolled out a cloud-based storage locker for TV shows,” commented Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber.

This feature, however, may be U.S.-only: TUAW’s readers from UK, Canada and New Zealand are reporting they are getting just Vimeo support.

Obviously, if you don’t have SHSH blobs saved, stay away from the update if you don’t want to lose your jailbreak.

AppleInsider reports that Apple sold half a million Apple TVs in Q2 2011 but it’s not planning a hardware update for the device this year.

Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told AppleInsider that “his industry checks have turned up no evidence that Apple plans push a hardware revision to the Apple TV into production during the third quarter [2011].”

Instead, Apple will probably focus on software updates. The company already announced that iOS 5 will feature AirPlay mirroring that lets wirelessly display everything you do on your iPad 2 right on your HDTV through Apple TV 2. It is believed that this feature will be also available for iPhone 4 and upcoming iPhone 5.

Kuo also said that his industry checks indicate Apple shipped 480,000 units during the second calendar quarter of the year, a 70 percent lift over a year earlier.

The fact that Steve Jobs has no trust in set-top box as a device that could revolutionize the TV market makes many people think Apple may decide to build televisions. Well, that may be a reality soon as DailyTech reports that Apple “is teaming up with a major OEM to sell iOS-powered, Apple-branded displays.”

According to the former Apple executive who anonymously spoke to DailyTech, Apple plans to bundle Apple TV and iTunes inside physical television sets. The source claims that Apple is teaming up with a major supplier (Samsung?) to provide the physical televisions, which will be rebranded as Apple television sets. The source believed a fall launch was in order, but the product could launch as late as next year.

According to the former Apple executive, the company plans to “blow Netflix and all those other guys away”. “You’ll go into an Apple retail store and be able to walk out with a TV,” the source said.

Shortly before Apple has released the second generation Apple TV in September last year, Jobs participated in the D8 conference, where he said that the Cupertino firm had no idea on how to succeed in the television market. Although the Apple TV 2 has sold very well (probably over 2 million units so far), it’s hard to call Steve’s “hobby” device a revolutionary product.

Apple has been rumored to be working on its own TV set numerous times in the past. According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster’s note Apple will release an HDTV “in the next two to four years.”

In February, Apple has posted a new job position looking for people to work on next-generation power supply technology that will power – among others – the TVs.

In addition, according to the other job listing, Apple has been researching OLED technologies and is looking to implement this technology into future products.

Firemint has just announced that its Real Racing 2 HD will be the “first title to support full screen wireless gaming over AirPlay”. According to the developer, this won’t be just mirroring – the players will be able to play Real Racing 2 HD on their big screens without a cable, while their iPad 2 displays racing telemetry in real-time. “No black borders, no wires – just iOS racing at its finest,” the company promises. The new release of Real Racing will take advantage of Firemint’s dual-screen technology, allowing a console-style gaming experience similar to Nintendo’s Wii U.

“Relish Real Racing 2 HD’s superb visuals as they’re streamed effortlessly to your big screen TV. Grip your iPad 2 and steer with unerring precision and the freedom of wireless play. Stay closer than ever to the track with real-time racing telemetry, displayed directly on your iPad’s screen,” the developer said in the press release.

The current version of the game features full HD 1080p TV-out and dual screen gaming support on iPad 2, allowing you to play Real racing 2 HD on your HDTV at full 1080p using HDMI adapter.

AirPlay mirroring for iPad 2 is one of the new features of recently announced iOS 5. It lets you wirelessly display everything you do on your iPad 2 right on your HDTV through Apple TV 2. It will let you airplay not only photos, videos and websites (it’s already available on Apple TV 2) but also video games.

Among the tons of the new features that will come to our iDevices this fall along with iCloud and iOS 5, there are two Apple TV2-related features. The first one is Photo Stream – a special Photo Stream album on your Apple TV 2 will let you access your photos stored in iCloud. iCloud’s Photo Stream service automatically uploads the photos you take or import on any of your devices and wirelessly pushes them to all your devices and computers.

The other feature is AirPlay mirroring that lets wirelessly display everything you do on your iPad 2 right on your HDTV through Apple TV 2. According to Apple’s iOS 5 promo video, this will let you airplay not only photos, videos and websites (it’s already available on Apple TV 2) but also video games. To allow atv2 to make use of the AirPlay mirroring, the new Apple TV 4.4 software will be released. The beta version of this new firmware has been released to the developers yesterday.

Up for review we have four AirPlay enabled apps, designed with your Apple TV 2 in mind.

First we have Camera for Apple TV. Obviously, it’s an app that displays the live view of your iPhone’s camera on the big screen, though there is a bit of delay. I have trouble seeing what this $2 app can do for the average user, besides providing young children with entertainment. Sure you could display something for others to look at, but couldn’t you also show them the item? They are, after all, probably in the same room as you.

Next we have Web Browser for Apple TV. This basic web browser will show up on your Apple TV2, but you will have to look past some small quirks. The app, like the previous one, has some delay. Your atv will not display smooth scrolling or fullscreen web browsing. Your phone’s screen, when in portrait mode, appears only in the center of your TV screen, with each side being a huge, black bar. You can flip your phone into landscape mode, but then the edges of the browser become slightly cutoff and the text then becomes pixelated. The app ends up feeling more like a screenshot of a browser beamed to your TV than a full Apple TV web browser. Also, if you go to the mobile YouTube site and watch a video, the video will not show up on your TV! It will play on your phone and give you the option to stream audio, not video, to your Apple TV 2, but the actual video won’t show up on your television.

Third is an app called Videos for Apple TV. Here I thought you would load your personal videos to your iPhone and then stream them, but I realized that this is achievable with the iPod app. So what does this app do? It comes with four videos (fireplace, fish tank, lava lamp, and waterfall) that you can stream to create an ambiance in your house. The videos, which are each several hours long and contain sound, are high quality and definitely worth 50¢ apiece if you are one who enjoys the ambiance offered by tranquil videos.

These three apps, all made by TapMedia Publishing and sold for $2 each, are nice. However, due to AirPlay, the apps may not work as well as the developer wishes they did. The creator should include universal app support as all of these apps could be supported by the iPad, with the exception of Camera for Apple TV on the original iPad. Also, it would be nice if the developer offered a deluxe app for perhaps $5 and combined many of their AirPlay capable apps into one suite.

This deluxe suite I imagine is a little like the app TVOut Genie!, by JwalSoft Inc. This $3 app includes several “widgets,” each of which can be viewed through AirPlay or through Apple’s $40 adapter. Widgets available include documents, web browser, maps, text editor, photo browser, Facebook, and camera. Documents are importable through iTunes, Mail, Mobile Safari, and some other third-party apps. You can then put your documents on display. There is also a Maps widget, which recently received satellite and hybrid view options. The text editor is a bit plain, but it gets the job done. Facebook photos can also be streamed to your Apple TV. All of these widgets, plus ones like the previously-mentioned ones, are available. For only $3, this app is a bargain and it offers a lot to love.

Some of these are niche apps, but they’re pretty inexpensive and worth a try. Again, these don’t all work flawlessly, but if you’re bored with your Apple TV and don’t want to jailbreak or don’t know how to (well, you obviously know where to find out how to), try these apps out.

TapMedia Publishing, the creators of Fire for Apple TV and Videos for Apple TV, an AirPlay-enabled apps you probably wouldn’t spend a whole 4 bucks on ($1.99 for each), has released two new, far more useful apps that bring great new functionality to the Apple TV 2.

Camera for Apple TV ($1.99) turns your iOS device into a real-time video camera for your atv2. The app streams your iPhone/iPad or iPod touch camera to your tiny black box via AirPlay. The frame rate is pretty low (it’s actually a series of static images), but it’s still pretty impressive and we hope to seeing the update coming soon with the improved frame rate.

Then comes Web Browser for Apple TV ($1.99) that brings a web browser to your Apple TV 2. It’s also AirPlay-based and it streams the web pages from the browser running on your iOS device to big screen via atv2. This basic browser has built-in search bar and lets you mail links, bookmark your favorite web pages, and view multiple online documents including .pdf, .doc.

Update: We have some promo codes for Camera for Apple TV, Web Browser for Apple TV and Videos for Apple TV to give away. Retweet the contest message and comment on this Facebook post for your chance to win. The winners will be announced on Friday, May 27th.

I ask you the problem with the Apple TV, you (may) say the lack of playable video types. With Air Video, a great iPhone and iPad app, your Apple TV will be playing all of your video files (without conversion) in no time.

The app can stream video from your computer to your iPhone or iPad, which can then be streamed to your Apple TV in the new 4.3 firmware. Currently a beta version of the video server is required (or else only audio will stream through AirPlay). This beta is available for download on InMethod’s website. After you select the folders which you would like Air Video to watch, all videos within are accessible on the Air Video app on both the iPhone and iPad (the app is universal).

I tried the beta solely for the AirPlay with video support. It worked flawlessly. I noticed that the server continues streaming after the computer’s screensaver activates too.

When testing Air Video, I tried a very high quality MKV file and also an OGG video file (among many others). These both needed to be converted by the program’s live conversion feature and it worked just great – videos played smoothly while maintaining a good appearance.

This app will play anything. I downloaded a bunch of video files to test out but one wouldn’t play on my desktop computer. I figured that the file was corrupt but added it to my Air Video folder anyways. To my surprise, this app could play what QuickTime X couldn’t recognize. I was incredibly surprised.

It is possible to add most video files to iTunes and then stream to your Apple TV via Home Sharing, but this app is about convenience; just have Air Video watch your folders and you’ll always have up-to-date access to your video library (provided you have your iPhone or iPad to act as the middleman).

Air Video is available on the App Store for $2.99.
