The new Apple TV doesn’t feature a web browser and the developers are not allowed to create third-party browsers for tvOS. At least not officially. Forking an exisiting GitHub project posted by Steven Troughton-Smith’s, a Dutch developer jvanakker has built a native tvOS browser for Apple TV 4.

tvOSBrowser allows you to navigate pages with the Siri Remote. You can switch between cursor & scroll mode by tapping on the center of the touch area. Click the touchpad to click. Menu will navigate back. The Play/Pause button will let you input URLs.

Here’s a video showing this simplistic browser in action:

tvOSBrowser uses a private API (UIWebView), so it wouldn’t be approved on the tvOS App Store. But it can be downloaded by anyone from here.

Last Monday at the WWDC, Apple previewed the next major software update for Mac, the OS X 10.11 El Capitan (check out the major highlights). Safari on El Capitan brings a wonderful new feature for Apple TV users: the ability to AirPlay web videos to the Apple TV without sharing your whole screen and in the background.

In Yosemite, you can of course AirPlay your entire browser screen to Apple TV and whenever a web video is played, it will show up in full screen on your television. But as soon as you stop playing video on the Mac, the view on the TV goes back to a pure mirror of your screen.

In El Capitan, you will be able to broadcast a separate web video to the Apple TV. It continues to play while you open new tabs on Safari or multitask with different apps – only the video and nothing else is mirrored to the TV.

Use AirPlay to share web video without sharing your whole screen.
Play video from a web page to your TV with Apple TV — without showing everything else on your desktop. Just click the AirPlay icon that appears on compatible web videos and you can watch your video on the big screen.

If you can’t wait till this fall for El Capitan to get this feature, or you have an unsupported Mac you can check out AirParrot 2 for Mac that features media streaming and specific app mirroring.

AirServer re-engineered for iOS 6

It’s September 19, so iOS 6 should be with us any minute now. Once you install it on each of your iDevices, don’t forget to check out the newest version of AirServer (for Mac or PC) which has already been re-engineered for iOS 6. The new AirServer includes 1080p HD mirroring, content streaming and better support for video-on-demand apps like Netflix. The PC version hits version 1.0 and is now feature complete, with audio, movie and photo streaming.

Full HD support

AirServer has been enhanced for iOS 6 and now lets you stream content or Mirror your display in full 1080p HD. According to the developers, this enhancement is “twice as crisp as before and makes all the difference when viewing content on your iMac or HDTV via AirServer.”

Big screen browsing with Safari

iOS 6 with AirServer brings even better web browsing to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. With AirServer you can view the web full-screen on your Mac, HDTV or projector. Zooming-in to read illegible text becomes a thing of the past thanks to AirServer.

Facebook

Now that Facebook has been fully integrated into iOS 6 you’ll be able to share, post and stay up-to-date in a myriad of new ways. Combined with the new update of AirServer this means you’ll be able to stream all your social interactions to the big screen to share with others around you.

Maps

Apple has designed Maps from the ground up and is purely vector based, so graphics and text are incredibly detailed – even in full-zoom. With AirServer you’ll be able to stream the new Maps application from your iOS device onto your Mac or HDTV. Great when you need to debate the route with your friends before you even hit the road.

AirServer is sold at $14.99 for Mac and Windows version (there is also free 7 day trial) and you can get it from here. The new AirServer is a free update for existing users.

Mark Gurman and Sonny Dickson at 9to5Mac found that Apple has included hidden bluetooth support in their second-generation Apple TV. Bluetooth support is not present within the current Apple TV OS, but the device does currently ship with a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip installed and, according to 9to5Mac, Apple’s next major operating system, iOS 5, will turn on this bluetooth support.

Gurman’s guess is that Apple is positioning this bluetooth support mainly for keyboards (this could mean the company is working on Safari for ATV2) but perhaps this would also make it possible to hook up your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch (having more controllers would make bringing games and apps to Apple TV simpler).

According to 9to5Mac, users will be able to activate the device’s built-in bluetooth support via the standard settings menu. A standard pairing menu will then appear and users will need to connect with a provided passcode.

Apple is also rumored to launch a faster Apple TV this fall with their dual-core A5 processor and 1080P video playback support.
