Apple expanded universal search on Apple TV 4 to include Fox Now, FXNow, and National Geographic TV. At launch, the feature was limited to iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, HBO Now, Showtime and Showtime Anytime, but later Apple expanded it to include PBS and PBS Kids.

Universal search allows users to quicky search for movies and shows in multiple apps simultaneously using text entry or the Siri remote (voice search). You can search by title, genre, actor, and more. Apple Music members can also search for songs and albums.

Universal search for movies and TV shows in iTunes, HBO GO, HBO NOW, Hulu, Netflix, PBS, PBS Kids, SHOWTIME, SHOWTIME Anytime, FOXNOW, FXNOW, Nat Geo TV is only available in the U.S. 

Users in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and United Kingdom can search for movies and TV shows available on the iTunes Store and Netflix.

In other countries the universal search feature only works with iTunes.

Apple has promised to bring more services to the feature over time. In an interview with BuzzFeed‘s John Paczkowski, Tim Cook said that in the near future the universal search will be intelligent enough to know which services the user is subscribed to, highlighting which sources are available free or with existing subscriptions.

Proving our previous reports true, Apple TV gained the FX NOW channel today. It is Apple’s first channel addition after the UI overhaul, Family Sharing and Beats Music addition on Thursday.

Announced earlier in 2014, FX Now is FX Network’s video-on-demand service which pulls all the contents from its FX, FXX and FXM Networks. Their iOS app has been available for a while .

Last time, we focused a lot on how the channel would bring The Simpsons to millions of its fans. But as it turns out, FXNow for Apple TV only supports a few episodes and clips, for now. This is expected to change as FX launches the Simpsons World Service later this fall.

Leaving that aside, you will be able to enjoy these popular shows on your Apple TV starting today (Mashable):

TV shows such as American Horror Story, Justified and Archer, as well as shows syndicated on various FX Networks, including How I Met Your Mother and Parks and Recreation. The app also includes access to films such as Moneyball, Avatar, The Other Guys and Step Brothers.

The FX NOW channel needs you to login with a valid cable operator account to view its shows and movies. The supported providers include AT&T U-verse, Optimum TV, Bright House, Cox, Time Warner, Comcast, Suddenlink and WOW!

Well your Apple TV home-screen just got a bit more congested today, as two more channels made it to the show. Though a bit late, FOX Now and CNBC are now showing on Apple TV.

CNBC brings all of their business related news and the original Prime series shows to the channel. However you’ll need to sign in with your supported cable subscription account to take full advantage of this. Though a library of videos are available even for non-subscribers, VOD and live streaming are restricted to subscribers of Comcast, AT&T, DirecTV, DISH, Verizon, and more.

FOX Now channel on the other side provides their popular shows like Glee, American Idol, The Following, Family Guy, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, 24: Live Another Day, New Girl, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mindy Project and many others for on-demand streaming. If you’re a subscriber, you can stream episodes right on the day after they’re aired while others will have to wait a whole week to do so.

The FOX Now channel shouldn’t be confused with their FXNow service, about which we discussed a couple of days back. Also TV2 Sumo, the official Apple TV channel for TV2 networks is now available exculsively to Norway users.

With millions of The Simpsons fans spread across the country, the FX Networks will never have to worry about subscribers. And that is exactly why they announced their video-on-demand service FXNow, at the beginning of this year. The FXNow app is already available on the iPhone and iPad but the latest reports seems promising for Apple TV users too.

TV reporter Jason Lynch tweeted on Monday that the Fox-owned channel is working on FXNow apps for Apple TV, Roku and other set-top boxes, to be released anytime in the next twelve month slot.

This channel would give access to unlimited streams of content from across FX, FXX and FXM networks and as Mashable notes, the popular ones include:

” TV shows such as American Horror Story, Justified and Archer, as well as shows syndicated on various FX Networks, including How I Met Your Mother and Parks and Recreation. The app also includes access to films such as Moneyball, Avatar, The Other Guys and Step Brothers.”

Lynch also confirmed that the earlier announced Simpson World service (which promises all 551 episodes of The Simpsons on-demand) will be a part of this new FXNow channel and not a standalone app. However when the time comes, you will indeed need to log in with your cable subscription account to gain access to their library. The supported operators include AT&T U-verse, Optimum TV, Comcast, Suddenlink and WOW!

So if you’re in the US and you meet the above requirements, you’ll be roaming Springfield by this time next year!
