iPad mini AirPlay Mirroring

With the introduction of iPad 2 and Apple A5 processor in March 2011 Apple TV fans got an amazing new feature called AirPlay Mirroring. A5 was powerful enough not only to send a separate picture or video to an HDTV via Apple TV (AirPlay), but also to wirelessly display everything what’s on the iPad 2 screen right on the HDTV, allowing to stream apps and play games on the big screen TV (AirPlay Mirroring). Since then, all the iDevices that got A5 chip or one of its more powerful brothers (A5X, A6) supported AirPlay Mirroring. Yesterday, A5-powered iPad mini and A6X-powered 4th gen. iPad joined the family of devices that support one of the iOS coolest features.

Here is a complete list of iOS devices that support AirPlay Mirroring:

  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 5
  • iPad 2
  • iPad 3
  • iPad 4
  • iPad mini
  • iPod touch 5th gen.

AirPlay Mirroring is also supported on OS X Mountain Lion.

Air Show photo editing app for iOS and Apple TV

Air Show, an iOS app that lets users preview, select and edit images on their iPhone/iPad screen while simultaneously displaying the more polished view on an HDTV screen via Apple TV, has been recently updated to support iPhone 5 and iOS 6. Air Show now also lets you add color captions and soundtrack to your real-time photo presentation.

Air Show is simple to use and fast. It lets users do basic crop, zoom, rotate and highlight with a laser pointer — all literally in a couple of seconds as users are showing off images in real time for an audience. With Air Show, Apple TV owners can share their iPhone/iPad photos on an HDTV screen while using the handheld as an on-the-fly preview, slideshow builder and editing tool.

Unlike photo collage apps that can’t display content outside of the device, or slide-builder apps that require sitting down and building a presentation first, Air Show is about on-the-fly previewing and tweaking of images on the small screen of the iPhone or iPad while the audience enjoys the show on the big screen.

Air Show is free and available in the App Store. There will be some add-on features and online storage for additional image playlists that will cost extra for heavy users, but the free version is great for most casual users.

iPod touch AirPlay Mirroring

During today’s conference at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, along with a brand new iPhone 5, Apple introduced a fifth generation iPod touch that now supports AirPlay Mirroring that lets you wirelessly stream what’s on your iPod touch to your HDTV and speakers via Apple TV. This makes a new generation iPod touch a fifth Apple’s device that supports AirPlay Mirrorng: up until now the feature has been available on iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3. It will also be supported on the iPhone 5.

The new iPod touch is the thinnest iPod touch ever and features a 4-inch Retina display; a 5 megapixel iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording; Apple’s A5 chip; Siri and iOS 6. The fifth generation iPod touch will be available in October for a suggested price of $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model.

To use AirPlay Mirroring, tap the AirPlay icon from the app you’re in — such as Photos, Music, Videos, or Safari — and everything on your small screen plays on your big screen. You can also stream music to any AirPlay-enabled speakers or AirPort Express-connected speakers.

Apple will release its own branded TV by the end of the year, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley, quoted by The Mac Observer. In a note to clients, Walkley wrote:

Following our supply chain checks, we have increased confidence Apple will launch a 50-plus inch LCD-TV product by [the first fiscal quarter of 2013].

Walkley also expects the LTE iPhone 5 to be released in the December quarter of 2012.

In a recent interview on Bloomberg Radio, Apple analyst Gene Munster assured that the Apple television is real („we met with some component suppliers at CES“) and said that he thinks Apple TV set „is going to be the biggest thing in consumer electronics since the smartphone came up.“  He was betting that it will be announced later this year, probably for the holiday season.

Back in January Globe and Mail reported that Canada’s largest telecommunications companies – Rogers and Bell – were in talks with Apple to become Canadian launch partners for its Apple HDTV. Another source said Rogers and Bell already had the product in their labs.

This week in “Apple TV News from the Web”:

  1. AirPlay mirroring coming to iPhone 5
  2. Anatomy of an Apple Rumor
  3. Let’s talk… new Apple TV
  4. Killer iPhone feature
  5. Sharing some love

We are open for submissions: if you find anything related to Apple TV and you think it may fit here, send us a tweet or a Facebook comment and we’ll post it the coming week.

—————-

1. AirPlay mirroring coming to iPhone 5

A source told TUAW that iPhone 5 will also feature AirPlay mirroring that lets wirelessly display everything you do on your iPhone right on your HDTV through Apple TV 2. We’ve been all expecting it but it can also be a… rumor.

2. Anatomy of an Apple Rumor

“Everyone, including your mom, re-reports Apple rumors,” claims PCMmag. The guys at the Magazine have a great infographic that shows the anatomy of an Apple Rumor. We know how it ends, but how it all begins? And what is your role in this process? Check it out on this graphic.

3. Let’s talk… new Apple TV?

Apple has finally announced that its upcoming media event will take place on Tuesday, October 4 at 10am Pacific Daylight Time on Apple’s campus in Cupertino and will be led by Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook. There are no doubts that Apple will focus specifically on a new iPhone, but is there a chance that Tim will surprise us with the updated of the company’s “hobby device”? There were some speculations that Apple may be releasing a new Apple TV with A5 chip making the device capable of true 1080p.

4. Killer iPhone feature?

9to5Mac reports that, according to a source familiar with the SOC’s manufacturing, the new iPhone will feature Apple’s dual-core A5 processor, 1GB of RAM and improved, 8 megapixel camera. But the new device’s biggest selling point and a game changer may be a software feature called Assistant – a Siri-inspired, system-wide voice navigation system. The phrase on this year’s invite, ‘Let’s talk iPhone,’ seems to confirm this. Check out 9to5Mac’s article to learn more on how the Assistant works.

4. Sharing some love

Our Facebook fan Erick Ramirez wanted to “share some love” to Apple TV Hacks by creatively playing with our logo. LOL, thanks Eric, we are impressed! We share some love too!

How do you like it?

AppleInsider reports that Apple sold half a million Apple TVs in Q2 2011 but it’s not planning a hardware update for the device this year.

Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told AppleInsider that “his industry checks have turned up no evidence that Apple plans push a hardware revision to the Apple TV into production during the third quarter [2011].”

Instead, Apple will probably focus on software updates. The company already announced that iOS 5 will feature AirPlay mirroring that lets wirelessly display everything you do on your iPad 2 right on your HDTV through Apple TV 2. It is believed that this feature will be also available for iPhone 4 and upcoming iPhone 5.

Kuo also said that his industry checks indicate Apple shipped 480,000 units during the second calendar quarter of the year, a 70 percent lift over a year earlier.
