The Apple TV streaming service has been talked about so much in the last 24 hours that it is almost visible on the horizon. In case you missed it, Apple is rumored to be working on their own $30-$40 video service, which is set to be launched somewhere around September.

It seems that Apple is currently in talks with content owners like Fox, ESPN, Disney, CBS and more, to get their programming on board for the streaming service. And according to New York Post, to make dealings go in the right direction, Apple is even promising viewer details like their personal info, watching habits, and locations, to program owners.

The company is willing to share details on who its viewers are, what they watch and when they watch it to entice broadcast networks and others to go along with the service, sources said. [..]

“They’re allowing a lot more decision-making by the content owner,” said one source familiar with the talks, adding that Apple has told potential partners, “It’s up to you, whatever you guys want to do.”

This data will be used by content providers to localize niche audience and better target their ads.

But such a move sounds odd to come from Apple, as they have always upheld user privacy. It is worth noting that other providers like Netflix and Amazon have previously turned down similar requests from content providers, on their corresponding streaming services. This makes it even less likely for Apple to entertain the demand for user data.

If this turns out to be true, it will show how badly Apple wanted their streaming service to get off the ground. But even if Apple caves, the service will probably come with an ‘Opt out’ option, in case you don’t want your watching habits to be tracked.

Read more on the Apple TV Streaming Service and the HBO NOW service which is coming to Apple TV next month.

mls-apple-tvApple is on a role with their updates and allowing third parties to hook into their Apple TV device: back in June the company added HBO GOWatchESPN and Sky News apps, last month Vevo TV, Disney Channels, Smithsonian and Weather Channel showed up on our little black devices, next it was Amazon with their update to watch Amazon Video on the Apple TV, and then the big 6.0 firmware update offering iTunes Radio, iTunes Music Store and AirPlay from iCloud. Yesterday Apple added yet more content with Major League Soccer and Disney Junior channels appearing now on Apple TV home screen.

The MLS app allows users who are fans of American Soccer (football for us, Brits) to watch the Major League Soccer right from their Apple TV, whilst the Disney Junior app offers up several shows for the little ones.

MLS “Channels” section includes free on-demand video highlights, analysis, fantasy soccer advice, and player profiles as well as full episodes of MLS 36 and MLS Insider. Users can watch videos created by their favorite clubs within the “Clubs” section. The latest league standings are also available.

With an MLS LIVE subscription, you’ll have access to live streaming and archived versions of regular season matches (local and national blackout rules apply). Subscriptions start at only $14.99/month. You can purchase online or within MLS on Apple TV.

Apple is not only increasing the function of Apple TV by adding these apps, but is also appealing to two different markets. It is keeping the sports fans and kids happy all on one device, without having to pay a cable subscription. These accompany the other Disney apps which Apple released last month, showing the partnership with Disney is really starting to show on the Apple TV.

Apple has just released an update to the second and third generation Apple TV adding five new channels/apps: long-rumored Vevo TV, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Weather Channel and Smithsonian.

Vevo, Weather Channel and Smithsonian are free, while both Disney channels require a pay TV subscription with cable and satellite providers that have a deal with Disney (these include Comcast, Cox, AT&T U-verse, Charter, Optimum, Midcontinent Communications and Verizon FiOS; big players like Time Warner Cable, Dish or DirecTV currently don’t offer access to the Disney channels).

As always: if you are on jailbroken ATV2, stay away from this update for now if you don’t want to lose your jailbreak. It appears to be “just” an over-the-air content update – new apps show up automatically after rebooting – so no need to be worry about losing the jailbreak.
