Apple TV 4 to come with Siri?

Pierre Blazquez (@bp_unicorn), an iOS developer, has found a reference to Apple TV in Siri‘s plist files on iOS 7.1. He found the mention of an item number 3 on the file and tweeted his take on it as Siri on the next Apple TV or the iWatch.

Later, 9to5Mac took a deeper look and found that both 7.1 and 7.1.1 has these references but not 7.0.6. They’ve confirmed that the number 3 is indeed referring to the Apple TV family and not any new devices, as evident from its previous references and Apple’s official documentation.

“As shown by Apple’s documentation, ’1′ and ’2′ represent the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad families. The ’3′ represents the Apple TV family. The Apple TV has been given the ’3′ designation ever since Apple TV became based off iOS. The Lowtide application uses the ’3′ identifier for instance, as do current Apple TV apps.”

Due to the absence of a built-in microphone on the current generations of Apple TV devices, it is unlikely that Siri will be making its way to them. But with the rumors of Apple TV 4 floating around, claiming a completely redesigned interface, support for games, third party channels and more, it is safe to conclude that the next Apple TV will be seeing Siri’s voice navigation functionality too.

Besides, with Amazon Fire TV promoting its voice-search feature as a major selling point, it is unlikely that Apple TV 4 won’t have a worthy answer to it.

Apple TV software update 6.1 is out

Along with the release of the long-awaited iOS 7.1, Apple has yesterday rolled out a new firmware for Apple TV 2 and 3: Apple TV software update 6.1 brings some improvements to AirPlay and Remote app functionality and, most importantly, makes hiding unwanted channels from the main menu much easier.

Here is what’s new in Apple TV 6.1:

Main menu: Customize your Apple TV by hiding items from the main menu.
AirPlay:
- Adds a security option to require that iOS devices or Macs be verified with a one-time, onscreen code before using AirPlay. Requires iOS 7.1 or later on an iOS device or a Mac with Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later.
- Adds support to allow an AirPlay device to discover Apple TV over Bluetooth in environments where multicast or Bonjour traffic is blocked on the network or the AirPlay device is on a different subnet.
Remote app: View your purchased TV shows and movies in the Remote app and tap to play them instantly on Apple TV. Create and play iTunes Radio stations. Requires Remote app version 4.2 or later.
Stability and performance: includes general performance and stability improvements.

As always:

if you’re on jailbroken ATV2 – stay away from this update
if you’re on non-jailbroken ATV2 running 6.0.x – stay away from this update in case the jailbreak for Apple TV 6.0.x comes to reality (unless you have the SHSH blobs saved for 6.0.x)
if you’re on ATV3 and still believe the Apple TV 3 jailbreak may become reality – don’t update to 6.1

Latest jailbreakable Apple TV firmware is 5.3.

New Apple TV software beta released to developers

Alongside the release of iOS 7.1 beta, Apple has issued a new Apple TV software beta. The new beta specifically “enables users to mirror content of an iPad to an Apple TV using AirPlay.”

The update doesn’t go into too much detail to explain what this statement refers to, but I expect it is tackling some issues which have arisen from the recent enhancements to AirPlay on Apple TV as a result of the new iOS 6.0 firmware recently deployed to Apple TV.

If you’re a developer you can find the Apple TV software beta in the iOS developer center. Apple notes that this latest firmware is being provided to test the latest AirPlay functionality with iOS apps.
